“OVER THE FENCE” RELIEF
PRODUCTIVE WORK ON FARMS. POLICY IN TARANAKI COUNTY. To decide its policy in relation to the unemployment of relief workers under the No. 5 ‘‘over the fence scheme, on productive work on farms, the laianaki County Council held a special meeting yesterday. The interpretations to be placed on the provisions of the Act and the advice received from the Unemployment Board were discussed, after which it was decided that labour offering would be supplied to farmers who applied, conditionally on the merits of each application and after due inquiries have been made by the council. It was suggested that the assistance to he granted each applicant should not exceed the labour required to clear noxious weedis from five acres, or to stump that area, but thia was finally rejected in favour of an amendment that labour allotted to any individual should not exceed £5O in value and that the allotment of any further expenditure would be at the discretion of the council. Another stipulation agreed upon was that applications for labour would be entertained only in cases where the farmers were prepared to provide .the transport necessary for the men to and from their w-ork, the supervision, tools and cost of insurance. Of four applications for labour for clearing noxious weeds, one concerned land in the borough of New Plymouth and could not therefore be considered. The other three were from the county and were approved, subject to the conditions laid down by the council. Present at the meeting were: Crs. J. S. Connett (chairman), W. Hall, W. Cartwright, R. Wood, 9. Vickere, L. Carey and W. Thomas. '
