BRIGHT GOLF IN TARANAKI

PLAY-OFF FOR CHAMPIONSHIP.

FINE DISPLAY IN AFTERNOON.

(By

“Stance.”)

The play-off for the Taranaki champion of champions title between A. E. Conway, New Plymouth, and N. P. Green, Stratford, at Waiwakaiho during the week-end provided a great contest, the Issue being in doubt right up to the 34th hole. The first hole always seems to bother Green, but commencing in the morning it was Conway who struck trouble here and Green had a two stroke lead. Conway, however, had squared things by the fourth, and a great three at the seventh saw him take the lead. He was 39 out to Green’s 41. Conway played well coming home and was never worse than the scratch score at any hole. Green, on the; other hand, dropped strokes "at the tenth, twelfth and fourteenth, but got one back with a great four at the last. However at lunch Conway had a lead of six strokes and appeared to be in a very safe position. He increased his lead to seven at the first hole in the afternoon, when Green took a five, and this became eight when Conway collected a birdie three at the third. However, Green, was not done with, and had. won one back' at the turn. Conway" had come out in; 36 to Green’s 37. Conway played 'a - bad third at the tenth and Green reduced the margin to six again. Both had fives at the eleventh, but then Green, ramming down a tenfooter for a two at the twelfth, made the difference five.' He gained another at the next, but though he had a birdie two at Moses hid opponent" did likewise. Conway struck trouble at the fifteenth, and Green with a fine four snatched two more back, and when they went" to the sixteenth tee was only two.behind. However, he found the bunker with his second and Conway, playing a fine shot, holed -his putt for birdie three, and, Green’s chance had gone. Conway completed the round in 74 and Green 75. These are the two best cards yet returned on the present course in medal play and show that the game was well worthy of its title of a champion of champions encounter. In both this game and the event the week previous Green demonstrated in no uncertain manner that he did not display his true form in the North and South match and in the afternoon against Conway in the final of the club championship. Conway again showed that he is a greatly improved player this season, playing better and more consistently than he has ever before. It he continues with this improvement he will play his part in the open and amateur next year.
