ATHLETICS AND CYCLING
SPORTS MEETING AT WAITARA. The weekly sports of the Waitara Cycling and Athletic Club were held at the Camp Reserve on Thursday. Although the starters were not as numerous as has been the case there were fine finishes. Innovations were an old timers’ 75 yards, a high jump and bicycle races for boys and girls. Details are:— Three-quarter mile cycle: Roy Sole (40yds) 1, Roy Yardley (50yds) 2, M. Wiley (60yds) 3. Also started: C. Parker (25yds), W- Hicks (110yds), A. Fulton (120yds). Won by a wheel, the third man being three lengths behind. Time, Imin. 41 2-ssec. 1 One mile and a half cycle handicap: Roy Sole (80yds) 1, C. Parker (50yds) 2, Roy Yardley (100yds) 3. Won by little over & length. Time, 3min. 47 1-5 sec. Also started: M. Wiley (120yds), G. Tuffery (200yds), W. Hicks (220 yds). 100 yards: W. White (12yds) I, G. Fowler (Byds) 2, R. Grant (13yds) 3. Also started: D. Woodhouse (10yds). The winner came with an extra sprint at the finish and reached the tape a foot ahead of Fowler. Time, 10 1-5 sec. 220 yards: W. White (24yds) 1, G. Fowler (17yds) 2. The only other starter was R. Grant (26yds). Won by four yards. Time, 22sec. Old timers’ 75 yards: Jerry Jones (4yds) 1/E. w McEwen (2yds) 2, J. R. Bennett (4yds) 3. Also started: J. Eriwata (3yds), E. Beckbessinger (scr.), M. Fahy (10yds). Won by inches. Time, 12sec. 1 Chopping, lOin. block: T. Fowler (scr.) 1, G. Fowler (asec.) 2. The only other competitor was F. Olsson (ssec). The winner’s time was 43 4-ssec. High jump: R. Grant (sft.) L G. Fowler (4ft. Ilin.) 2. Other competitors: W. White, V. Laurent, M. Wylie. Trophies for highest points obtained have been donated by Mr. D. Dowsett, Auckland, for the running events, and by Mr. T. Fowler for the cycling. Points so far gained are: Running, Fowler 10 points, White 7, A. Cole 2, S. Wilson 2, R. Grant 2. Cycling, Roy Sole 9 pointe, M. Wiley 7, R. Yardley 5, C. Tippins. 2, C. Parker 2, G. Tuffery 1, J. Wigg 1. The officials were: Judges, Messrs A. Lash, J. Ratten'bury, L. Andrews and V. Penman; timekeeper, Mr. -E. -Spurdle; handicapper, Mr. S. George; children’s stewards, Messrs W. Wordsworth and N. Brown; secretary, Mr. G. Bird.
The committee decided to comunicate with the trustees of the Herbert Trust fund with a view to securing a challenge cup to be competed for by boys of the two Waitara schools. Messrs S. George and T. Fowler were appointed" as delegates to represent the club at the annual meeting of the Taranaki Centre.
