WIREMEN’S EXAMINATION.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—-Since so much publicity has been given to the results of the - wiremen’s examination, may I add a few facts so far as they concern the Technical College? Before the evening school opens for the year a circular is sent out to all employers of wiremen, including the Borough Council, giving the date of the commencement of the classes, and asking them to inform their employees. The classes are also advertised through the newspapers. The class in question was held on 35 evenings. Of those who sat for the examination the following are the percentages of attendance:— A 28, B 51, C 88, D 17, E 34, F 20, G 17. The last four did not attend until the council made the class compulsory. This came into force in July, and thus enabled these students to have only five classes for instruction prior to the examination. With one exception, all ceased to attend the class as soon as the examination was over, instead of continuing until the results were known and in case of failure prepare for the next examination, which is held in March. -We do not reopen this class until the middle of February next, and, maybe, these students will come along and expect to be ready for the March examination with a fortnight’s preparation. Student B with 51 per cent, passed; C with 88 per cent, is quite young, and this is his first year at any electrical theory. The syllabus for this Class was drawn up after consultation with the borough electrical engineer and his leading electricians. The college class prepares the candidate for the electrical theory part of the written paper, and the Borough
Council arranged a special class for instruction in and interpretation of the regulations, which is also part of the written paper. There is no class held for practical work. The classes are open for inspection at all times by any employer or member of the borough electric light committee. Your readers may now judge whether the fault lies with the instruction.—l am, etc., A. L. MOORE, Principal. Technical College, New Plymouth. December 9, 1931.
