A SUPERB GOLF PLAYER

MISS WETHERED’S ACCURACY. SUCCESS IN MIXED FOUDSOMES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) London, Oct. 22. One of the most interesting event* on the golfing calendar is the mixed foursome competition, which takes place each year on the course of the Worplesdon club. It counts as an unofficial championship, and players from all over Great Britain as well as the Continent compete in it. Five times since it was instituted Miss Joyce Wethered has been on the winning side. It is a remarkable achievement. She has changed her partner almost every year, but ehe is such a wonderful ally that it does not seem to matter. In fact, it is assumed that Miss Wethered and her partner, whoever he may be, will win. . ' This year Miss Methered played with the Hon. Michael Scott, who was winning amatour championships in other parts of the world, including Australia and Italy, nearly thirty years ago; and with little or no trouble they went ■ through the large field to the final, in ' which they were as supreme as in their earlier ties. Miss Wethered’* golf was again superb. There is no w-oniari to equal her, and I do not think there is a ' | man who has her certainty in playing J the shot. Bobby Jones, after having ’' played with her several times, at St. ' Andrew’s two years ago,. described her ‘ as the greatest player in the. world- ' He told me: “All men have some faults or weaknesses. So far as Miss Wethere is concerned, she has none. Every sing e I stroke in the game comes naturally an I easily to her. I cannot point to , and say it is not as good as any other. Such is Miss Wethered’s perfection, , that, if ehe should err, everyone is . startled. In one round of the mixed foursome tournament, after her opponent ■ had tamely pitched a zimple shot into a

bunker, she did the same thing. This was so astonishing that little else was talked about for the rest of the week. It reminded one of an experience, of Harry Vardon in the championship eight years ago. At one hole he topped his brassie shot and was dumbfounded by the mistake. He never ceased to taix about it. Fancy topping a brassieThroughout his long career he coum never remember having done it befoie, i and he was completely mystified. In this . sense, Miss Wethered is the Vardon of , to-day. There is no player, man - or i woman, who possesses her amazing cei . tainty and accuracy. .
