SWIMMING AT HAWERA

CLUB’S ACTIVITIES UNDER WAY.

STEPS TO IMPROVE STYLE.

(By

“Lifesaver.”)

With the advent of warmer weather the Hawera Swimming Club’s evenings have become more popular and most of last year’s swimmers are again competing. One could wish, however, that the senior members, more particularly the ladies, took a keener interest in this department of'the club’s activities. So far the training nights have not been as successful as was hoped, probably because a number of the officials have been unable to attend. By next week it is hoped that this disadvantage will be overcome so that something better may be, anticipated. Lack of discipline has hampered the work, which ■has been carried on in a rather haphazard way. If the innovation is to bear fruit members must co-operate with the officials to a greater extent. In one way the club is already doing something to’ improve style. Width races have been a feature of club evenings and should materially improve what is a weakness among Hawera swimmers, turning. The club does not propose commencing the banner and cup competitions il after the holidays. The programme mittee would be well advised to draw ,up a tentative programme for as much of the season as possible before these competitions are started. Hawera’s first carnival of the season will be held next week. There will not be a great deal of serious swimming, the evening being mainly devoted to novelty events. I. Jobson has obtained permission to attack the 220 yards record at the carnival, but there is a possibility that he may not be fit enough. The first step towards reviving polo in Hawera is the arrangement, of a match with Opunake, and this is not a day too soon. Mr. W. J. C’laringbold would probably coach teams if swimmers showed sufficient interest.

Of last year’s prominent swimmers Jobson, Anderson and Ryan have been in the water again frequently this season. M. Good, the club’s energetic secretary, is a swimmer who has improved out of sight. The other njght he dashed over 25 yards in 13 3-ssec, ■which is good .going so early in the season. , , In the intermediate boys’, class the Hawera club has some promising members. The two Clarkes, Oliver and K. McGlashan are all promising boys. The other day McGlashan, who had already swum some distance, was timed to .do 220 yards in 3min 15sec, and if taken in hand by someone more experienced over this distance he should improve on this. time. If he can reduce this figure to any extent he will be in the first flight of the Taranaki middle distance swimmers. SHIELD BOWLING MATCH. HAWERA NARROWLY 5 BEAT PARK.
