(Returns of laid-up shipping in Italian ports for ehch of thft first Hine months of the current year reveal a surprisingly consistent state of employment (or unemployment) of the fleet. During the whole of the period the aggregate gross tonnage .of the vessels laid up for economic reasons was never greater than 61-6,000 tons nor less than 551,000, the country’s total shipping being 3,335,67’3 tons. By August lost there had been a considerable increase iri the tonnage of Vessels laid up for survey or repairs, the 69 vessels of 52,662 tons on January 1 increasing to ; 05 vessels of 172,360 tons, but in September this volume had declined again to 90 of 152,405. There was a further decline in these particular returns for October, as three such large units aS the Esperia and Ansonia, of the Sitmar Line, and the Giulio Cesare, of the N.G.L, have been recently returned to service after extensive repairs. With regard to the other totals, several cargo vessels have obtained Black .Sea charters, while a few tankers are also finding employment. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS.
