TENNIS TOURNAMENT DATES

DISSATISFACTION IN TARANAKI. ASSOCIATION COMMITTEE MEETS. Criticism of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association’s allocation of the same ehampionsliip dates for Taranaki and for Manawatu and of delay in replying to correspondence about the' matter from the Taranaki Lawn Tennis Association ,was made at a meeting of the management-committee of the Taranaki Association at ,New Plymouth last night. Those present were Messrs. E. Griffiths (president), C- H- Strombom’ (secretary), F. S- Grayling, W.- Middleton and A. W. Scott. The secretary reported having written to the New Zealand Association protesting against the granting to Manawatu of the same dates for its championship tournament as Taranaki, which had been accustomed for many years to hold its tournament during the second week in January. He had written twice to the New Zealand Association protesting against the position but had received no reply. Mr. Grayling suggested that a telegram be sent to the New Zealand Association asking for an immediate reply to the letters and further protesting against the awarding of the dates January 5 to 8 to Manawatu a month after those dates had been awarded to Taranaki. It was possible, Mr. Grayling said, that in certain circumstances the position could prove fatal to the club conducting the tournament. Mr. Grayling’s suggestion was adopted, The action of the secretary in granting permission to four coast clubs to conduct an inter-club competition was confirmed. 1 . The secretary reported that the competition was working well and that the Pungarehu Club had become affiliated io the association. The committee decided that the finances of the association would not permit of a donation being made to the Hawke’s Bay Association to assist in the repairing of earthquake damage, but expressed the opinion that the New Zealand Association should donate £lOO regardless of donations from provincial associations. ’’ ■ The Hawera Club was given permission to hold its tournament on December 26, 28 and 29. The Manawatu Association wrote suggesting a conference at Palmerston North during the North Island championships between the Manawatu, Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa, Wanganui and Taranaki Associations to consider amendments to the Christie Cup rules. A copy of the amendments proposed was forwarded by the Manawatu. Association. i The committee decided it would be unable to be represented at the conference owing to the clash in the dates of the associations’ tournaments,, but that it approved of the suggested alterations with the exception of two, suggestions in place of which, it decided to (forward to Manawatu for consideration. If it was found possible to appoint a representative to the conference the committee would do so. A challenge is to be made to the Wanganui Association for the Christie Cup. February 20 will be suggested as the date for the match. A suggestion that a hard court junior tournament be held in North Taranaki was made by Mr. Scott, who said that the Park (New Plymouth) Club would make ite courts available if desired. The suggestion met with favour among members of the committee and Messrs. Strombom, Scott and- Grayling were appointed to consider the. holding of a junior tournament. It was suggested the tournament could be held on successive Saturday mornings. Scott was appointed tournament secretary. . 1
