LADY QUEX GALLOPS WELL MOTERE’S 'WEIGHT AT ELLERSLIE. BAROSCOPE'S CLASSIC CHANCES.

(By

“Hurry On.”)

Racing Fixtures. December 9, 10 —Woodville J.C. December 12—Waipa R.C. December 16—Dannevirke R.C. December 19—Hororata R.C. December 26—Waipukurau J.C. December 26, 28 —Westland R.C. December 26, 28—Taranaki J.C. December 26, 28 —Dunedin J.C. December 26, 28, ’ 29 —Manawatu R.C. December 26, 29, January 1, 2—Auckland R.C. Ganpat, who for some months has been trained at Takanini by J. T. Jamieson for the Hawke’s Bay owner Mr. J. S. McLeod, has been sold to Mrs. Hurley, of Wanganui, and has entered P. E. Pope’s stable. The absence of Timorous from Takapuna engagements was due to her ibeing a little off colour last week. 'She was given a course of physic and has now resumed work at Takanini with the rest of J. T. Jamieson’s team. The New Zealand Herald states that the Matamata trainer R. J. Mateer will take a small team to Taranaki for the holiday meetings at New Plymouth and Stratford and it will include. Lady. Lulu and Dark Marble. Mateer will have only one representative . at the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting and this will be Gay Lap, who is reported to have trained on nicely since racing at To Kapa. At the West Australian Turf Club’s meeting at Perth on Saturday, November 21, the November Handicap, one mile and three furlongs, was won by Bonny Note, by Paper Money from Bonny Helen. Bonny Note was'bred at Elderslie and sold as a yearling in Melbourne. A sister to him, secured by Mr. O’-, Brien, of Christchurch, at the last yearling sales at Trentham, is shortly to be. placed in commission at Riccarton. Sir Charles Clifford has abandoned the idea of sending a team to the holiday meetings, and will now concentrate on the northern trip, embracing the Manawatu and Wairarapa fixtures. His representatives will be. Cricket Bat, Zeebrugge, Babel, Winsome Hind, Sailor’s Love, and Fleeting Glance.” A sister to Watch Officer, who showed a lot of pace as a two-year-old and was subsequently sold to go to Australia, has not been long in work at Hastings, but she is said to be a very promising youngster. She will not race for some time, but is expected to hold her own with the other two-year-olds from that district when she has had a race or two. Ruffles, who has been paid up for in the hurdle race at the Waipa meeting on Saturday, worked very freely over six furlongs on the No. 2 grass at .Ellerslie last Saturday morning. The Quin Abbeygelding is carrying more condition now than he has done for some time past, and if taken to Te Awamutu is sure to acquit himself creditably. Prince Ponibal is not being hurried a great deal in his work, and there would appear to be 'a little doubt as to whether he will make the trip to Ellerslie for the coming summer meeting of the Auckland Racing Club) ' It was his owner’s original ■ intention that he should do so, but it will not be surprising if a change, of plans is revealed; If he does race at Ellerslie, probably E. A. Keesing will have the mount. This half-brother to Veilmond will be remembered as having run a great second to' Posy at Trentham in October. Nimex, the three-year-old fill'y by Limond from Exactly, made her appearance on the first day of the Waikato spring meeting, where she contested the Trial Stakes. She ran a good race to the turn, where she was second. She then weakened, finishing fifth. She was next saddled up for the Vauxliall Handicap at Takapuna last Monday, and car, ried sufficient money to make her third favourite. However, she was somewhat unruly at the barrier and was stood behind the field, never ibeing prominent throughout. At Taumarunui she accounted for the Trial Plate, so that she i was not very long in reaching the winning list. Limex’s dam, Exactly, was a very speedy sprinter in her day, as was also her grandam, Tact. Exactly used to race in the colours of Mr. J. D. Jones, who also owns Limex. The Railway Favourite. The Lackham three-year-old Golden Wings is the early favourite for the Railway Handicap, to be run at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. With one pound more than he carried into second place in the '■Stewards’ Handicap he cannot be regarded as being badly treated by the handicapper, but he is likely to encounter stiffer opposition in the northern capital than he did at Riccarton. In addition to the firsthand third horses in the Stewards’ Handicap, Cimabue and Croupier,.he will be faced with Laughing Prince, Cadland, Karapoti, Supremacy, Lady Quex, Silvermine and Arisus, amongst others, and this is a far more classy field than that which went, out at Riccarton. Nevertheless Golden Wings is brilliant out of the barrier and has tons of pace, two very valuable assets on a track like Ellerslie. Opponent for Bronze Eagle. , After his fine showings at Takapuna Baroscope is being mentioned as likely to prove one of Bronze Eagle’s most dangerous opponents in the Great Northern Derby on New Year's Day. After having none of the luck of the running in the Alison Cup he was running on in. third position at the finish, while on. the second day he scored a very convincing win in the St. Andrew’s Handicap. Baroscope can certainly claim a stayer’s pedigree as his sire, Weathervane, was by Lemberg, a Derby winner, from In Vain, a full sister to the .triple crown winner Flying Fox. His dam, Tortrix, is by Martian from the TorpedoHoneysuckle mare Tortulla, who carried 8.1 first past the post in the New (Zealand Cup of 1901. With blood like this on both sides the mile and a half journey on New Year’s Day should have no terrors for the Waikato colt. New Plymouth tracks. There is no doubt that rain is badly needed on the New Plymouth tracks, and if none falls in the next week there are likely to be some sore horses before the holiday races. Except for the two-year-olds, the grass track is never used and all work is being done on the plough. Before breakfast yesterday Sparkling Morn and March Alone went half a mile on the grass in 52sec, both doing it nicely. ■Monaghan and True Lap were associated over seven furlongs on the plough in 1.34 J. True Lap is looking better now than for a long time past. After A breakfast Green Patch and Garrick were the first to go, but they were restricted to good pace work on the plough. Orapai and The Swell were both going well within themselves over a mile, ine last seven taking 1.39 J. Both horses moved very freely all the way. Singer had several lengths’ start of

Gold Dawn over six furlongs, but she joined him two furlongs from home and the two finished on terms. Gold Dawn’s time was 1.18. They ran the last two in 25 3-5. Gold. Dawn did her task in a taking fashion. Arvada and Playground did an easy working gallop over a round. Gibraltar and Little Doubt went six furlongs at three-quarter pace.- The former hit out better than he has of late and appears to be throwing off his soreness. ■ Lady Quex, who was -having her first gallop since Feilding, showed that srie is a fit mare by-reeling off half a mile in 49 4-oscc. She took 25 3-5 for the first two but dashed over tl>.e last couple in 24 1-5, This was a fine effort on her. part. Merry Way on the grass after a slow start dashed over three furlongs in 38. Easter Time is'suffering from a bruised leg and was lame. It is to be hoped, that the trouble will not prove serious as the throe-year-old was looking like coming good. Royal Finance, -Flowlight and Corner-, man did easy tasks. Motere’s Cup Weight. The Christchurch writer “Sfiirdridge” rather takes the Auckland handicapper to. task in regard to Motere’s weight hi the Auckland Cup. He writes: “Under .the weight-fpr-ago scale—and that ought to be a good guide—a horse should improve 51b from four to five years of age. over two miles. This important fact is taken cognisance of by some handicappers, but not by all, and apparently the Auckland weight-adjuster practically ignores it, writes the Auckland Turf correspondent of the Sun. Take the case of Motere, winner of the last Auckland Cup, carrying 7.0 For the same, race next Boxing Day he has gone up 51b only, which te a light penalty to pay for his - success, plus the fact that no allowance has been made for improvement as indicated by the weight-for-age scale. Motere has failed to get in the money since his Auckland Cup victory, but of that much notice ought not ’be taken, for there are only two tWo-mile races in the Dominion, and Motere’s form last Boxing Day suggested that -he was nothing if not a stayer,* best at two miles. ■ Taking these factors into consideration, it can be said that Motere has. been let in’ the Auckland Cup about half a stone too light. He has run a couple of line races this season, in the Mitchelson Cup and the Waikato Cup, and with two or three-other• runs, he ought to saddle ujp in tip-top condition for the big Ellerslie contest on BoxingDay. On the figures, Motere is entitled to be -favourite for the Auckland Cup. Although Gay Crest was actually first past the post in the last Auckland Cup, it was generally considered that without interference from the southerner Motere would have won. Gay Crest was then giving Motere lib only, but this ‘time there is 231 b between them. Of course, Gay. Crest, unlike the Te AwamUtu representative, has done well in the interim, but this very factor suggests that the form of Motere in defeating him last Boxing Day was more valuable than was conceded, at the time, the distance of two miles always being considered.
