BOROUGH OF INGLEWOOD

ENCOURAGEMENT OF SWIMMING. REPORTS ON WORK OF MONTH. 'The Inglewood Borough Council met last night, the Mayor (Mr. J. Gibbs) presiding. Reports on the work done in November were received. The water and drainage systems were working satisfactorily, reported the borough overseer, Mr. H. Winter. The curbing and chanelling in Matai Street had been completed and the ground between the curb and fence returfed. Patching the streets with bitumen was completed. The footpaths were being cleaned and the deposited m Chard’s paddock to fill any depressions. During the annual clean-up 15 lorryloads of refuse had been collected and deposited at the ruibbWh dumpThe slab drains in the Jubilee Park and Chard’s paddock had been completed. The trimming of reserve hedges had been completed. Th© number of units registered at the sub-station for the .month . was 43 005, reported the electrical engineer. During the month two motors had been installed in the Moa dairy factory and a motor in the Maketawa dairy factory. One installation had been re-condition-ed and- a number of repairs attended to. The system generally was working satisfactorily and the lines and plant were in sound condition. One new subscription had been opened and 19 cancelled, leaving a total of 171 subscribers, reported th© librarian. Twenty-six books had been purchased, including two replacements. The Mayor said he had (been present at the opening of the baths and had been pleased to see so'many children present. Arrangements had been made for several carnivals and undoubtedly Inglewood, was lucky in having such an enthusiastic swimming club. Or. Crossman suggested the caretaker of the baths should have certain hours for filling th© baths so as to prevent the lowering of the water pressure. The school headmaster was permitted to take children to the baths during the dinner hour provided there was always, a teacher in charge; the council would in no way be responsible for any accidents. • It was decided to prevent climbing over the walls after hours. Th© Mayor suggested that the councillors should put a shilling in and donate a small trophy for a race for th© bigger boys. He said swimming should be fostered among children as much as possible. The councillors immediately parted with their shillings. BOROUGH LEASES. A tender of £4 for the lease of the horse paddock until the end of March was accepted.' Correspondence regarding the borough insurances was discussed, Cr. Spurdle stating that in the original resolution passed all insurajnee companies with offices in Inglewood should have an equal share of the insurances. The Taranaki Power Board asked the council to meet a committee of the board on December ,16 to discuss the supply of electricity. ■"With regard to several borough leases, the council decided that the motion already passed could not be altered and that a special meeting of the council be called for Wednesday next to discuss the redraft of borough leases. The dog license was fixed at. 10s. -per dog, with a refund of ss. if paid before April 1. A letter was received from the’secretary of the Esther James Tour asking the council to make elaborate arrangements for her arrival at Inglewood, as she was making a walking tour advertising New Zealand-made goods. With regard to the hawking of meat in the borough it was reported that the matter was in the. hands of the borough solicitors, who would hold a conference with the local butchers. It was decided that the town clerk and Or. Larson should draft a letter to the local Member of Parliament and several Ministers, stressing the unfairness that farm land in the borough did not receive the I'2| per cent, rebate in rates such as farmers outside the borough received. The Mayor reported that the inspector of main highways had visited Inglewood yesterday and had given a very fair report. Mr. H. Patterson was granted permission to move and re-erect his fence around borough property in Hinau Street at the pleasure of the council and to cut grass on borough streets. It was decided to procure 30 tons of bitumen to repair the main highways and some borough streets. The purchasing was left to the works committee.

The council also sat as the Domain Board. Mr. Larson reported that some of the trees recently planted in the parks were not growing well and needed attention.

The Inglewood Cycle Club was granted permission to cut the grass, .put the cycling ,track in order and hold its cycle sports in Jubilee Park. The meting was attended by Crs. Spurdie, B. Larson, E. Crossman, E. H. Braybrooke, G. C. Tait and R. B. Young.
