PATEA COUNTY COUNCIL

SEALING CONTRACTS ALLOTTED. MAINTENANCE WORK OF MONTH. The Patea County Council met yesterday, Mr. W. G. Belton presiding. There were also present Crs. W. 11. Watkins, C. E. Johnston, W. Back, J. Peat, R. G. Scown, A. ,J. Gibbs and J. Lupton. The engineer, Mr. L. F. Row, reported as follows on the month’s maintenance work: — Kapara Riding: Clearing of slips and general improvements have been carried out on the Moeawatea Road with relief labour, and the offset-hitch grader is now grading the hill. The lower section of the Valley Road has been graded anq, ordinary maintenance work has been attended to on other roads. Moumahaki Riding: No work othei than general maintenance has been carried out in this riding. Waverley Riding The Kohi Busn Road and the Nukuliau Road have been graded and all' roads are now in fair order. It is proposed to start re-metal-ling on the Waverley beach highway in readiness for sealing at an early date. Otoia East: The Matuku Road has been improved by filling across _ several low sections, and similar work is being done on the -Otautu Road. The metalling programme is being proceeded with and some 15 chains have already been completed. The steep knob on the Kaharoa Road near the Whenuakura factory is being lowered. ' Otoia West: A section of the Upper Taumaha Road has been re-conditioned with new metal. In preparation for the two-coat sealing approximately 30 chains of the Lower Ball Road has been bemetalled and a start has been made with similar work on the Ball highway. The metalling programme for the riding will be completed in a few days. The crushing plant is still working satisfactorily and approximately 2950 cubic yai;ds have been crushed and carted to date.* It is proposed to commence crushing small chips for bitumen woik at an early date. The statement that the settlers had met and formed a new committee for the-purpose of taking charge of the work done on their length of road, was contained in ' a letter from those settlers.« Messrs. J. D. Campbell, J. C. Stevens and R. H. Hughes had been elected to act as the committee with the last named as chairman. The committee,' it was stated, had decided to take charge of the work done on the road and to examine the surfaceman s time-sheet and sign it if found to be in order before sending on to the council for payment. The letter asked that the committee be given the right to discharge any man from the road if in were found that his work was not up to the mark. The committee proposed to report to the council every month and to call a meeting of all the settlers annually for the discussion of general business. , The council received the letter and aecided to notify the committee that in the event of any extra labour being employed the council should be notified immediately. ‘ . The tender of Isherwood, Bellam ana Company for the re-sealing of approximately four miles of the road on the Auckland-Wellington via Taranaki highway in the county was accepted. There are 100 chains to be done about two miles south of Patea, 200 chains from the Waverley town boundary south, and 40 chains in odd sections. The samp firm was given the contract for the sealing of 88 chains on the Ball highway, 25 chains on the Lower Ball Road, 80 chains on the Kaharoa highway, 20 chains on the Lower Kaharoa and 00 chains on the Waverley beach highway. PATEA HOSPITAL BOARD. MONTHLY MEETING HELD. The monthly meeting of the Patea Hospital Board was held yesterday, Mr. C. R. Honeyfield presiding. Others present were Messrs. W. 11. Watkins, J. Lupton, A. T. Christensen, W. Back, C. E. Johnston and R. G. Scown. ■ With regard to minor accidents at the freezing works the chairman and. Mr. Johnston, reported having interviewed the medical superintendent on the question of their treatment as out-patients. The superintendent had said he could not entertain the idea but he had sug-. nested that a small dressing station oe established at the works for treatment of such cases. It was thought that the superintendent would give instruction, in first aid if requested by the breezing Workers’.Union. Messrs. Watkins and Johnston reported that they had inspected the fences on the Mcßroom estate, and upon their suggestion it was decided, to have the hed a e adjoining Walkinton’s, trimmed, and° that the small trees should be plftscred *of grass. The medical superintendent, Dr. W. T. Simmons, reported that there had been •21 patients in the hospital, at the beginning of November. Admissions had numbered 18, while 19 had been, discharged and one male patient had died, leaving 19 patients at the beginning of December. PRIMARY SCHOOL CRICKET CUP. OKAIAWA DEFEATS RIVERLEA. The Okaiawa .school cricket team beat Riverlea in the final of the Herbert Smith Trust Cup competition for South Ta'ranaki schools at Kaponga on Friday. A trophy goes to each team. The match was decided on the first innings, Okaiawa winning by 30 runs. Okaiawa batted first, making 4 , ui> Riverlea went to pieces and made only 12. Riverlea followed on and this time knocked up the respectable score of 73. With 25 minutes to go, Okaiawa went in and Jost four wicket for 18, Riverlea failing to get the team out in the required time. . . 1 Batting for Riverlea in the fit st inniims R. McLeod was top scorer with three For Okaiawa Collins 10 and Moses 13 were the best run-getters Baling for Riverlea, Kenyon and R. McLeod were the best and Moses and Coffins were the pick of Okaiawa bowlers. Lite Rev. Watson, Normanby, and Mi. Leo Abbott, Kaponga, were the umpires. . Trophies are awarded each year in Various districts by the Herbert Smith Trust (Waikato) to encourage sport m the schools. Cups were provided by the trust this season for competition country schools in South Taranaki, and two groups were arranged: No. 1, Ma naia (two teams), Manaia Convent and Okaiawa: No. 2, Riverlea, Kaponga and Manmdoki. Riverlea and Okaiawa were the winners in the Uro groups.
