MURDER ATTEMPT DENIED
MOTHER AND CHILD IN AVON WOMAN; COMMITTED FOR TRIAL ALLEGATION OF ILL-TREATMENT. BTORY TOLD BY THEIR RESCUER. By Telegraph*—Press Association. Christchurch, Dec. 8. Gertrude McConachy, aged 27, a single (domestic, was committed for trial by Mr. E. D. Mos’ey, S.M., on charges of attempting to commit suicide and attempting to murder her four-year-old son on November 36 by drowning in the Avon. ■'A witness gave evidence of seeing scabbed in the Avon with a child which she seemed to be pushing towards the bank. He pulled both out. The woman said she had been driven to drowning herself by a man she was living with and his mother. Albert Francis Lee, at whose home accused had been staying, said he had never ill-treated her, but had spoken harshly to her at times. Lee’s mother, said the girl often displayed bad temper. .. ■ . A letter allegedly left by accused and read in court said: “I wish you all the best of luck with your lady, love, stick to her and don’t treat her like you did me. Bubby and I will not land in your life again.”
