CONCERT BY CONVENT

HIGH QUALITY PROGRAMME. SUCCESS OF ANNUAL EVENT. Those who have attended past concerts arranged as an annual function .of the Stratford Convent have only the most pleasant recollections of. the delightful musical and vocal inumbers which invariably characterise these, occasions. At the town hall last night pupils of the convent again came before the public, and that their effort this year surpassed, anything they had previously offered was clearly indicated by the applause which succeeded every item. There was a large attendance. The first item, a pianoforte trio, won the keenest attention and as the programme proceeded there was regret that an entertainment of such merit should have to have a conclusion. Whether the older pupils or the 'boys and girls held the stage the high standard was maintained. (Pianoforte numbers, songs, dialogues, folk dances, orchestral selections, a monologue—all were there, as well as a newcomer to a Stratford stage in the form of a whistled solo. Rothery; song, “Gathering Flowers,” senior girls; folk dance, “Children’s Playtime,” the infants; song, “O Mio Fernando,” from opera ‘.‘La Favorita,” Miss Hope Grant; orchestral selection, “Serenata,” school orchestra; folk dance, “Old Mole,” senior pupils; song, “Down in the Forest,” Miss V. Harry Walker Pitcher was convicted and fined £1 and costs fl Ils at the Eltham Police Court yesterday on a charge of driving a motor-car on Eltham Road without the necessary lights. The county inspector stated that the lights when tested were found to be in good order, but the defendant was not using them. , Larry B. Gibson was fined £1 and £1 Ils costs for driving a motor car witn only one head light. It 1 was explained that defendant tried to obtain a bulb for the lamp before he left town, but the garage where his father usually dealt was closed and he did not try to procure one elsewhere. Heseltine William Edwards was fined 10s and costs 12s for riding a bicycle without a light on Mountain Road. Daniel Alexander Weatherall, who was charged with a similar offence on Mountain Road, was fined 10s and £1 Os fid costs. The inspector said that when defendant approached the inspector he got off his machine and walked past, refusing to give any explanation. Counsel stated that the Eltham County Council wanted to impress on young fellows that they must obey the inspector. ... The magistrate: I dont know how it is that some of you are not killed. The Rawhitiroa .School cricket team visited Pukengahu on Saturday and played a friendly game with the Pukengahu schoolboys. Batting first the home team scored 40 (D. Old 11, A. Harris 12), to which Rawhitiroa replied with 42 (•S. Hutchens 12, R. May 9). Pukengahu’s second innings yielded 27, and Rawhitiroa hit up the 20 runs required for the loss of four wickets, thus winning an interesting match by six wickets. L. Phillips, Old and Harris (>Pukengahu) and Hutchins, O’Connor and Wood (Rawhitiroa) were the most successful bowlers. The teams were entertained at lunch in the hall by the ladies of the district and speeches of 'thanks were made by the rival captains. A return match is to be played after the ■Christmas vacation. The county workmen have . been spending some time on the Rawhitiroa Road lately, effecting improvements to the surface and banking up the sharpcorners. Most of the voters on election day, seeing the Rawhitiroa school grounds for the first time since the improvement scheme was put under way, were astonished at the progress that has been made during the last twelve months. Besides the excavation work, which has given the children a large level playing field, terraces have been formed, concrete paths constructed, the playshed rebuilt and painted, new lawns made, the fences repaired and the hedges cut, and a new experimental plot and tree nursery established. Miss Grace Surrey, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs. H. J. Bleakley, Rawhitiroa, returned to Paeroa on Monday. . _ Miss Elsie Belcher had the misfortune to injure her thumb rather severely while chopping. small wood recently.
