MANDATE FROM PEOPLE
THE GOVERNMENT’S DUTY
NO EXTENSION OF PARLIAMENT.
MR. WILKINSON’S EMPHATIC VIEW.
(By Wire. —Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Last Night.
Strong opposition to the postponement of the general election was voiced Mr. C. A- Wilkinson (Egmont) in tho House this morning. Mr- Wilkinson said he agreed with the views which had been expressed by the Ledder of the Opposition in regard to the extension of the life of Parliament. “To-day,” ho said, “We find Wellington is ringing with the statement that Reform ineinbers of the Goverinncnt have agreed to an extension of the life of Parliament for twelve months. I believe that is a correct statement. Mr. J. A. Nash (R., Palmerston North): Are you iri accord with it? * Mr- Wilkinson: No, I am not in accord with it. I don’t believe in the Government’s policy. The Gdvernment’s policy is a policy of high taxation under every possible heading. It is the duty of the Government to get a mandate from the people, and I think some of them would have difficulty in getting it. We have a new Government and a new policy, and the first thing the Government should do is to get a mandate from the people.
