NEW ZEALAND HORSE DEFEATED IN A CLOSE FINISH.— There was a great struggle for first place in the Metropolitan at Randwick, Sydney, on 5th October, the outsider Strength (on the rails) just lasting long enough to hold victory from Mr. R.J. Murphy's Trentham-trained Concentrate (on the outside). The official verdict was ‘‘won by ahead." Spearman and Carry On dead-heated for third place, and the rest of the field was close up.
