In fancy costumes of every colour they constituted one of the most care-free and gaily garbed gatherings ever witnessed in the district. Costers danced with Hawaiians, cowboys with Indians, soldiers with pirates and footballers with cricketers, whilst stately Victorian ladies were seen tripping the light fantastic to modern jazz. Children- representing every school in the Patea district literally threw themselves into the spirit of the evening with an abandon that was an entertainment in itself. The function also attracted a number of the visiting pioneers and old residents, the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs. F. Ramsbottom) presiding. The music provided by Messrs Carey and Gilmour sustained the gaiety until supper terminated the proceedings at 10 p.m. The very modest Charge for admission realised £2O 4s. i Among the dancers were: —Irene ■Fairweather, Old English Lavender; Helen Hamerton, Dutch Girl; Lorna Hughes, Butterfly; Norman Martin, Detective; Audrey Blackman, Queen of Hearts; Kathleen McKenna, Page; Marjorie Hardaker, Sailor; Fraser Paterson, Rabbit; Tess Cunningham, Blue (Butterfly; Neville Harris, Mexican; Garry McKenna, Clown; Eric Fitzwater, Cowboy; Jack Harris, Mexican; Eva Whitehead, Japanese; Colin Roots, Nigger; Olive Harris.
