OPEN VERDICT RETURNED
DEATH OF GISBORNE CLERK. FOUND SHOT IN STRONGROOM. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Gisborne, Oct. 14. An open verdict was returned by the coroner in an inquest oji Lawrence Shacklock Evans, whose death in a strongroom of the borough council offices occurred yesterday. The coroner held that the evidence was insufficient to establish whether death was accidental or intentional. Lawrence Shacklock Evans, aged M, junior clerk employed by the Gisborne Borough Council, was found at 8.4 a a,m. ' yesterday lying on the floor of the office strongroom with a bullet wound in his head and the office revolver in his hand. ■ Evans arrived at the office at 8 o’clock and appeared cheerful. The assistant town clerk, Mr. W. Jenkins, after opening the strongroom, entered another room. A few ilioments later he heard a shot, which lie thought was a tyre burstiim. A few seconds afterwards another shot sounded and Jenkins then dashed into the strongroom, where he found Evans lying. Evans was a single man and had been in the council's employ about two years.
