WOMAN YACHT MASTER
FIRST IN NEW ZEALAND. - A certificate as a yacht master in New Zealand waters has been granted to Mrs. A. E. Richmond, of Auckland, who qualified at the Marine Department's examination in Auckland on Friday. Mrs. Richmond has the honour of being the first woman to gain the certificate in Zealand, no other'woman having sat for the examination. Her yachting experience was-obtained m the yacht belonging to her husband, Captain J. W. R. Richmond, of the Tamaki Tacht Club. .Besides sailing experience, a qualified yacht master must possess a knowledge of general seamanship, sextant work,'the rule of the road, the receiving of signals by morse and semaphore and a knowledge of the international code of signals. The navigation problems to be passed include determining latitude and longitude by the sun and stars, deviation of the compass, the setting of courses, to counteract currents and vanous tidal questions. The numerous subjects require considerable study and they were mastered by Mrs. Richmond in about six months.
