MYSTERIOUS SHOOTINGS
BULLET THROUGH WINDOW ANOTHER CASE AT PALMERSTON. UNSOLVED MURDER RECALLED. (By Wire. —Special to News). Palmerston N., Last Night. The occurrence of a third mysterious shooting since the unsolved Blakeway murder of August 23, is causing some uneasiness among residents, who suspect the presence of an armed nocturnal wanderer of irresponsible tendencies. A few days after the murder a mail carrier heard a bullet twang past his head into a tin letter box at Karere in the early morning. A few hours later a bullet was found in the box. A fortnight later two bullets were fired through a window in a store at Hokowhitu during luncheon and a few seconds after the proprietress had walked away from the pane. The presence of a lagoon close by led to the theory that the shot had been fired by some person in search of game, though from the position of the holes in the glass it was not very certain how this could have happened. The most recent affair occurred a few days ago at the residence of Mrs. W. Lord, 13 A Edge ware Road. Entering a front room about 8 a.m. Mr. Lord’s son noticed that the floor was sprinkled with glass which had fallen from a round hole in the window the size of a half-crown. Further search resulted in the finding of a bullet on the floor. It was described by a ballistics expert as of .22 calibre. The police evinced interest in the find but have not as yet been to the house. The window faces directly on to the street, which is the ordinary type of chain-wide thoroughfare with houses on both sides. Nobody heard the sounds of the shooting which, it is presumed, occurred some time the previous evening.
