HAWERA HIGH SCHOOL

DONATIONS ACKNOWLEDGED. The Hawera High School Board of Managers met last night, the chairman, Mr. R. S. Sage, presiding. The headmaster, Mr. A. Gray, reported that the school had resumed on September 15, when the roll was 254. A set of geographical magazines had been donated to the library by Carr Jones, and a donation of £2s' had been received from the New Zealand Motor Trade Association for the purchase of apparatus for the motor mechanics class. In addition, £5 had been given by the Incorporated Institute of Accountants of New Zealand for books for the commercial classes. The school was also indebted to Mr. Goodson for the gift of some polyanthus and pansy plants. “At a time when education expenditure is being discussed,” commented the report, “it is very encouraging to find bodies of men who recognise the value of financial help.” The report recommended that the downstairs corridor be repainted, that a picture be placed along the side of the ant room, and that the usual £2O be voted for the sports fund. " GENERAL ITEMS. The ranger reported to the Hawera Borough Council last night that four head" of wandering stock were found last month. The following relief work have been made by the Hawera committee for this week: Normanby Town Board, 12 men; Manutahi school committee, one man; Hawera Hospital Board, 3 men; Matapu school committee, one man; Tawhiti school committee, one man; South Committee, Mount Egmont National Park, 4 men; Hawera Borough Council, 39 men; Hawera County Council, 90 men. Tributes to the work of the Women’s National Reserve were paid by the Hawera Hospital Board yesterday. It was remarked that the activities of the organisation had relieved the board of the necessity of providing a considerable amount of charitable aid. “During the last term a great deal of interest was shown in the production of form magazines,” stated Mr. A. Gray, headmaster of the Hawera High School, in his report to last night’s meeting of the board of managers.” Some very fine work was done, and on the part of the editors of the various magazines a great deal of time was given to the sorting and selection of contributions. Some of the responsible members of the different classes must have spent a great part of the holidays in connection with the work.” Copies of some of the magazines were presented to the meeting for perusal and bore out all that Mr. Gray said about it. Two well-attended Communion services were held at St. John’s Presbyterian Church, Hawera, on Sunday. At the morning service the Rev. R. E. Evans discoursed upon the subject, “Until He Came,” a devotional meditation on the coming of Christ, and in the evening his subject was “Two Communion Lessons, Heaven’s great service to Earth, and Earth’s possible service to Heaven.’’ At the evening service Mr. C. Lamb sang a solo. In the play-off of the Hawera, Golf Club’s recent senior and junior bogey competition, Champion and Ward beat Tennant and Sturrock at the 19th hole. The clerk reported to the Hawera Borough Council last night that 6 bullocks, 45 cows, 50 heifers, 400 sheep, one lamb, 6 calves and 64 pigs were slaughtered at the Hawera abattoir last month, £75 16s. 9d. in fees being collected. The total fees so far this financial year were £2O 15s. 9d. more than for the corresponding period last year. The librarian, Miss H. C. Carson, reported to the Hawera Borough Council last night that membership was 598. Receipts for the month were £5O 155., as against £46 16s. 6d. in August, 1930. The fact that a Taranaki scholarship had been awarded Miss Audrey Harding on his application to tho University Senate was reported to the Hawera High School Board of Managers by Mr. A. Gray, the headmaster, at last night’s meeting.
