COUNTY ROAD WORKS

RAIN STILL CAUSES TROUBLE. STRATFORD ENGINEER'S REPORT. Maintenance work conducted in the Stratford county during the month was the subject of the following report presented to the council on Saturday by the engineer, Mr. J. W. Spence: North riding: Owing to the almost continuous wet weather all the roads have required greater attention in the way of metal patching than usual. It has been necessary to do five days’ crushing at the railway depot and the metal has been distributed on the various roads in the riding. Two sets of nine-inch concrete pipes have been placed in the Radnor Road. Two bridges on the York Road have been repaired. In the one near the creamery the old stringers have been replaced with ironbark timber covered with rimu decking and the suitable timber taken from this bridge has been used in strengthening the second bridge above the Derby Road junction. South riding: Metal patching has been carried out on the Warwick, Sole, Skinner South and Wingrovc No. 2 Roads. Colfix patching has been done on the Skinner North, Waihapa, Cheal, Finnerty, and Mountain Roads. Temporary repairs have been effected to the bridge over the Ngaire Stream Finnerty Road. It Will be necessary to strengthen. the stringers and cover tho whole bridge with°new decking. The crushing plant has been erected on the reserve on the Finnerty Road alongside the Waingongoro Stream where river shingle is being put through in order to obtain supplies for bitumen top-dressing. East Riding (Toko): Watertabling and metal patching have been done on the Mangaehu No. 1, Wawiri, Ahuroa West, Raupuha, Standish and Toko No. 1 Roads. The Ohura, Beaonsfield, Waiwiri and Toko No. 1 Roads have, where necessary, been patched with colfix. Eight days’ crushing was done at the Gordon Road pit, the maintenance metal obtained being distributed on the Wawiri, Makuri” and Mangaehu No. 1 Roads. East riding ‘ (Douglas): General maintenance work has been done on the Ohura-Mangaehu, Douglas South, Gordon, Crown and Manglaotuku Roads. Portions of the Ohura Road have been patched -with colfix. East riding (Huiroa): The period has been occupied with Makuri Road, metal patching and watertabling, the small roller being used in the patching work. A new ditch has been opened on the Mahakau Road to carry off flood water. Several small slips have been cleared away on the Douglas North Road, the watertables cleaned and overhanging fern cut. Portions of the formation on the Kota Road have been widened. Where points have been cut back the material obtained has been used for widening the fillings. The small drains on the - Akama Road have been attended to. The watertables and fern cutting have also received attention. A start was made with the shingle dressing on the Makuri West Road of Huiroa but this work has been held up on account of the weather. West riding: Metal patching and watcrtabling have been carried out on the Waingongoro, Brooks, Brecon, upper Hastings, Palmer North, Opunake No. 2, and Rowan Roads. The bitumen surfaces have, where necessary, been patched wifli colfix on the Palmer South, Duthie, Hastings, Finnerty and Cardiff Roads. Twenty-four yards of screened shingle was obtained from the Waingongoro Stream and 11 yards of coarse shingle was carted from the same stream. Approximately 10 yards of screened shingle and 20 yards of boulders ■were dumped on the side of the Manaia Road. Seven yards of screen rejects was used in building up the bitumen edges on Opunake No. 1 Road. Mangaehu riding: General repairs in the way of metal patching and watertabling have been done on the Tututawa, Mangaehu Main, Mangaehu South, Mangaotuku and Tauwharenikau Roads. A set of nine-inch concrete pipes has been used to replace an old wooden culvert on the Mangaotuku Road. All culverts on this road have been cleaned out and similar work has been done on the Tututawa Road. The work on the Manga Road has been very considerably hampered by wet weather but the. road is now practically clear. The timber for new culverts is being split and the work now in hand should be completed within a few days. Culverts and drains on the Puniwhakau, Mangaehu North, Taihore and Puni Track have received attention. Some minor repairs have been made to the Tututawa and Puniwhakau cottages. , Ngatimaru riding: The principal works have consisted mainly in freeing the roads of slips and cleaning watertables, the Junction Road requiring the greatest amount of attention. Some repairs have been made to the Pita Track. STRATFORD AUCTION SALES. At Newton K.ng, Ltd.'s Haymarket on Saturday there was a good attendance and a satisfactory yarding of pigs, all being sold under the hammer. Weaners brought s6d to 19s Cd; stores "to 245. Newton King, Ltd. report as follows on their mart sale on Saturday: There was a big crowd of buyers and a satisfactory sale was held, prices being good. Pullets brought from 3s Id to 4s Cd; hens, 2s 9d to 3s sd; roosters, 2s 4d to 3s 9d; ducks, 2s 8d to 3s. Lamb, 3s to 3s Cd. Cauliflowers, Od each; swedes, la 3d bag: parsnips, 2s bag; carrots, Is Id bag; apples, 2s 9d to 4s. At Messrs. R. M. Phillips’ mart there was a good attendance. Vegetables sold as follows: Cauliflowers, Cs 3d per dozen; cabbages, 3s to ss; carrots, Id per lb.; hams, fid per lb.; Sturmer apples, 4s 3d per half case; Dougherty’s, 3s Cd; killing hens, 2s 4d to 4s sd; layers, up to 3s Cd; roosters, 3s 2d to 4s; ducks, 2s 8d to 3s sd; chick cockerels, 3d to 3Jd each; bantams, 9d to 2e 3d; pet lambs, 4s and 4s Cd; barberry plants, 2s to 2<s Cd per 100. Furniture and sundries at ruling prices met with ready sale.
