OBSERVATIONS ON THE RUNNING.

3?HE TWO-YEAR-OLDS’ FIRST RACE. The Kemball bracket, Posy and Rulahut, carried more support than March (Alone and Sastrugi iu the Debutante Stakes. Flying Squad, Prince Pombal and Canefield got away badly, and when the field settled down Merry Ruler and [posy were is front from Grand Joy, Sastrugi, Gomstra, March Alone and ORulanut, Thera was little alteration at the straight entrance, where Merry Euler and Posy were still in front. (Merry Ruler, galloping freely, went on

to win nicely, and Sastrugi easily cut Posy out of second money. Genestra was fourth, then followed Grand Joy, Inflation, Broken Rule, Rulanut and March Alone. The winner, who carries the colours of Mr. F. Bristol, is a bay colt by Chief Ruler from the imported mare Merry Twinkle. He did his task in good style and will improve on this. However, he does not strike the eye as a two-year-old top-notcher. Sastrugi finished well. Posy showed pace, and so did Grand Joy. Genestra went a fair race, but the New Plymouth pair, March Alone and Glowlight, were never dangerous. MOERANGI’S FINISHED DISPLAY The public went for Winnagan, Moerangi and Hymgreat in that order in the Gonville Hack Hurdles. When tho field settled down Coon Song was the pacemaker from Hymgreat, Desert Lad, Whisogne and Winnagan. The order was much the same passing the stands, except that Moerangi had moved up into fifth position. Down the back Coon Song started to come back to his field, but he was still leading Whisogne, Winnagan, Moerangi and Hymgreat. Moerangi went to the front approaching the straight and won easily from Hymgreat, who finished well and beat Coon Song by three lengths. Day Lass was fourth,* followed by Desert Lad, Whisogne and Winnagan. Okapua lost his rider at the first hurdle. Moerangi avoided the trouble that he ran into the first day and was always going like a winner. He gave his usual finished exhibition of fencing. Hymgreat went a solid race, but had no chance with the winner. Coon Song hung on better than he. did the first day and should pick up a minor race before long. Day Lass beat some . tired horses to get fourth. Whisogne went well for the greater part of the journey, but Winnagan was a great disappointment. He was well in the picture for a mile, but then faded out. IMPETUOUS IN GREAT STRUGGLE. Curie and Impetuous were the only two sought after in the Springy Hack, and both went fine races. Korokio caused a lot of trouble at th barrier, but was eventually first out with Furlong, Impetuous, 'Childstudy, Tigerism and St. Roger ail being well placed. Curie and Teller were squeezed out at the start. Furlong and Korokio led out of the back stretch from Tigerism; Impetuous and Childstu y, -with Curie making up ground fast; Furlong was done at the straight entrance, where Impetuous challenged Korokio and, wearing her dow r n, won by half a neck. Childstudy was a length and a-half away, in front of Curie, with Tigerism, St. Roger, Movietone and Furlong following. Impetuous won well. L. G. Morris always had her W’ell placed and coming on the outside in the straight finished just too well for the leader. Korokio was always one of tho leaders and hung on well in the straight. She looks like coming back to her form of last spring. Childstudy went a good race and will do even better. Curie was the unlucky horse of the race. He was last away, but made up a lot of ground down the back. He looked a possibility coming into the straight, but could not get through. There is no doubt that he is.a smart hack. Tigerism went a fine race and will win in less select company. St. Roger also haped quite satisfactorily. Furlong again showed plenty of pace, but faded out- at the business end.. GOOD ONE FOR THE FAVOURITE Knollmere counted more supporters than Gray’s mount Tobaccoland in the Belmont Handicap, and duly pulled his supporters through. Knollmere was the first to break the line, but Tobaccolaud soon ran to the front from Knollmere, with Just An Idea, Pedestal and Juggle following at length intervals. There ■was no change at the far turn except that Pedestal had joined Knollmere in second place. Tobaccoland was first into the straight, but Knollmere soon had his measure and won with a lot in hand by two lengths. Tobaccoland held off Juggle by a length and ahalf, with Pedestal right up fourth. Knollmere -won in good style and he looks like turning out a very useful handicapper this season. He quite outclassed the field. Tobaccoland went well, but had no chaiice with the winner. Pedestal improved on his first day’s showing, but the other two were never dangerous. POMP BRINGS OFF A SURPRISE. Gay Court and Gibraltar were the best backed in the Trial Handicap, and though both went good races the littlefancied Pomp beat them both. Sir Gallant was the first to break the line from Beverage, Gold Zone, Pomp, Thrasher, Actaeon and Gay Court. Pomp ran -to the front down the back and led into the straight from Gold Zone, Thrasher, Actaeon, Gay Court and Seneschal, with Gibraltar looming up. Gay Court was the first to challenge the leader, and then Gray brought Gibraltar along on the outside, and” in a fine finish Pomp stayed on to' beat the favourite by three-quarters of a length, with Gibraltar a short neck away. Thrasher was fourth, with Gold Zone, Seneschal and Beverage all close up. Pomp was left in the Maiden the first day, but this time he was well away and, displaying all his two-year-'Old pace, was in front over the last six furlongs. Now that he has struck form he should soon be out of hacks. Gay Court went a good race. He was never too comfortably placed and Morris made attempts to force him through the'field. This left him without his usual finishing effort. Gibraltar was tnc unlucky horse of the race. He was always on the' outside and had to cover a lot of extra ground. He finished in great style and almost caught Gay Court. Thrasher and Gold Zone wont good races, but Actaeon was again a disappointment. Seneschal and Beverage were always in the picture. CRICKET BAT NEVER HEADED. Vertigern had a call over Cricket Bat and Pewa in a good pool for the Higgie Handicap. Cricket Bat was first out from Pewa, with Royal Gam? and Royal Finance next, followed by Little Doubt and Lady Pam. There was little alteration down the back, except that Royal Game ran into second place. Coming into the straight Cricket Bat was still in front of Pewa, Royal Finance, Lady Pam pud Royal Game. Cricket Bat held his own in the run home, beating Pewa by a neck, with Royal Finance a nose away. Little Doubt was a fair fourth, followed by Lady Pam, Briar Root and Vertigern. Differently handled, Cricket Bat showed that his first day’s form was ail wrong, and he won nicely after being in front all the way. Pewa also demonstrated that he was unlucky, in the Seaficld Handicap, going a slashing good jace. Royal Finance was always handy,

only failing to get second money, by the narrowest of margins, many thinking that it was a dead-heat. Little Doubt again failed to finish on.. Lady Pam was always handy and will do a whole lot better next start. The favourite, Vertigern, was never dangerous. PETER JACKSON IN GOOD FINISH. Taranaki brought off a long chance wjien the little fancied Peter Jackson came home at double figures in the Moutoa Hack. Lucky Moment and Gran Chaco led out of the straight from Arrowzone, Tentcall, Royal Black and Peter Jackson. This order was maintained down the back, where Zeebrugge improved his position. Royal Black ran past the leaders coming into the straight but was immediately challenged by Peter Jackson, with Air Laddie and Landmark coming fast on the inside. In a great- finish Peter Jackson just lasted long enough to beat Air Laddie by a head, with Landmark and Royal Black right up. The next to finish were Gran Chaco, Kissless, Tentcall, Shootist and Lucky Moment. 'Peter Jackson, who was being tried over a distance for the first time, did his task jyell. He was always well placed and came strongly in the straight and just got home in the best finish of the meeting. Air Laddie was well back early and had to make up a lot of ground, but securing a run on the rails made a determined effort, just failing to catch the leader. Landmark went°a fine race under his big weight, and so did Royal Black, who just failed over the last bit. Both Kissless and Tenteall went good races. LADY QUEX JUST GETS THERE. Lady Quex won the final event in a fine finish from Arisus and Silvermine. Arisus and Silvermine were the first out, but were soon joined by Trojan Melody, and this trio led Lady Quex and La Poupee down the back. Into the straight the order was the same, but Lady Quex then put in a claim on the outside and in a fine finish the brown mare got up to win by a head from Arisus, with Silvermine a head further back. Trojan Melody was two lengths away fourth, followed by Cimabue, La Poupee and Ridgemount. Lady Quex was always handily placed behind the leaders, but it looked as

though she might not get through at the straight entrance. Morris, however, took her on the outside and, finishing in great style under her big load, she w T on by a head. Arisus improved considerably on his first day’s running and was always in the van. Silvermine, having his first race this season, was solidly backed and only just failed. Trojan Melody was. confidently expected to go well and he did, but the class was just too good for him. La Poupee looked improved by her race the first day, but failed to run up to expectations. Cimabue was last early, but was running on in the straight. MARTIAN CHIEF’S SUCCESS SLEIPNER TAKES THE SPRINT. ASHBURTON ONE-DAY MEETING. Ashburton, Sept. 19.
