SETTLEMENT OF LAND

MONEY FROM LOTTERIES. PUTARURU SCHEME, SUPPORTED. Hamilton, September 17. An organisation named “The Relief of Unemployment by Land Settlement Association” has been formed at Cambridge with the object of promoting art unions for the purpose of financing land settlement.' It ie intended that the scheme should be entirely self-support-ing, and that its surplus revenue shall . be° available for distribution among hospital and charitable aid boards throughout the Dominion. It is proposed to apply the proceeds in acquiring suitable land . for small farms. Unemployed men will be given preference and will be placed on . the farms as tenants. The propomters contend that the scheme will relieve unemployment, increase production, and assist in keeping money in the country that at present is spent in overseas lotteries. They consider that from £20,000 to £30,000 could be raised by each art union, .and that from 70 per cent, to 75 per cent, of the amount subscribed will be available for the land settlement scheme. The scheme was originated by Mr. T. H. Kelly, of Putaruru, and was taken up by the Putaruru Chamber of Coniimerce. It has been approved by all the local organisations in Putaruru and by the Te Awamutu and Otorohanga Chambers of Commerce. A meeting convened by the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce was held at Canrthis evening. The meeting decided to 'rive the scheme its wholehearted support and it unshed the promoters every success. Mr. A. L. Mason, a member of the association, informed the meeting that the scheme had been submitted .to every member of the Cabinet. The land suggested to be settled was situated in the triangle between Cambridge, Putaruru and Te..KuitJ., • The scheme oould .be proceeded •wlth as'jSO|op rs authority, io„xpn,pf art upibps .ii if'! ‘; >.•«;? ■ sj tics?:'ut< l;i in si* d ? < c.m v
