N.Z. ECLIPSE STAKES

NO CONTEST FOR THIS YEAR RACE WITH ATTRACTIVE RECORD. LAUGHING PRINCE’S FOUR WINS. Although the New Zealand Eclipse. Stakes does not rank as one of the old-established weight-fqr-age races, the contests between 1920 and last year provided raee-goers with splendid racing and invariably attracted the best class horses in the Dominion to Wanganui. To-day racegoers visiting the river city will find this classic event deleted from the programme, and the day’s racing will be the poorer for the omission. Ranging from nine furlongs down to about seven furlongs in. the past few years, the New Zealand Eclipse Stakes has enabled the best class handicap middle-distance performers to meet the strictly weight-for-age horses and it has also given the Guineas candidates a further gallop under weight-for-age conditions to fit them for the rich Avondale and Great Northern Guineas. Horses of the calibre of Trespass, Amytlias, Thespian, Winning Hit, Razzle Dazzle, Nigger Minstrel, Gold Light, [ Rerempana, Civility, Laughing Prince, Lysander, Kiosk and Toxeuma have I fought out the issue in many thrilling finishes, and. great horses like Highland, Enthusiasm, Inferno, Motley, Grand Knight, The Hawk and others have been ■ beaten out of a place. In spite of the big pull -they have in the weights, three-year-olds have not enjoyed a great deal of- success in this race, and Razzle Dazzle and Laughing Prince arc the only two of that- age to win. They were exceptionally brilliant juveniles. In 1920 that great all rounder Amythas was. ea.ugbt short of a gallop in the initial contest and he was forced to lower his colours to- Trespass, who scored again two years later. The following year’Am-ythas made no mistake about things and decisively beat the smart four-year-old Listowcl. When Trespass scored the second time he created a big surprise,, for Thespian and Winning Hit both failed to catch him. Great as Thespian was, the race again eluded him in 1923, when he succumbed by a narrow margin to the brilliant three-year-old Razzle Dazzle. Royal Divorce won a rather spiritless ■contest'in 1924, but the following year saw piobably the greatest struggle ever provided racegoers at Wanganui. Nigger Minstrel and Gold Light were the stars, and Rcremoana, Rapine, Royal Divorce, Inferno and Motley made up the field. But they were in the background from the time the late Charlie O’Connor .released the tapes. Gold Light was actually first to move, but before she had gone a dozen strides the big black horse —gross and glossy he was that day — ranged alongside her, and then began a duel that will long be remembered. Both were under pressure as they hung in together across the top, and the whips were being used two furlongs from home. Tense moments followed as they- pounded up the straight, but. at the distance Nigger Minstrel faltered. Gold Light never varied her stride, but L. G. Morris gathered his. mount together again and in a mag-' nificent effort the .black horse joined the chestnut mare a few strides from the poSt. When the numbers went up for a dead-heat the crowd awoke as from a spell, and that ovation, was a tribute to two great racehorses. ’Nigger Minstrel never raced again and Gold Light performed much below her best in her few races afterwards. Rcremoana recorded an easy win in fast time in 1926, and in the following year Laughing Prince began his sequence of four wins. He surprised when he swept past the four-year-old Lysander, and again in 1928 he finished brilliantly on the outside to beat Kiosk by half a head, with Mask only a neck further baek. Laughing Prince was not troubled to win in 1929, but last year L. G. Morris outrode A. E. Ellis when the Quanfoek horse beat Toxeuma with the last run. The presence of. great horses and the resultant high-class racing undoubtedly draws the big, crowds, and if speculation has been cramped to some extent on Wanganui’s classic races it lias been compensated for by an. increase, in the totalisator turn-over on other races on the programme. Many will regret the disappearance of this race from the programme of the second day’s racing at the Wanganui spring meeting, and for the sake of the sport it is to be hoped that the deletion of this fine contest is only a temporary arrangement.
