RELIEF OF POOR PEOPLE
REVISION OF SYSTEM URGED WASTEFUL METHODS ALLEGED. GIVERS BECOMING LESS WILLING. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Sept. 18. A drastic revision of the system of giving relief to the pool - and needy was urged to-day by the Rev. C. G. Serimprominent social worker, who said thousands of pounds were wanted because of the lack of method in collecting and distributing funds. The source of supply upon which the societies depended was gradually drying. With most people it was no longer easy to wive, and unless the public was thoroughly convinced that its gifts were utilised in the best possible manner it would be very tardy in supporting the many organisations in existence. It was undeniable that the pauper class was rapidly increasing and the lack of effective methods must be blamed fox* that. Mr. Scrimgeour advocated an independent committee to advise on. an effective system. It might mean scrapping much of the present machinery, but unless the position was faced immediately matters would go from bad to worse.
