INTER-COLLEGE TOURNEY

POOR STANDARD OF RUGBY.

MATCHES CONTESTED.

By Telegraph.—Press Association.

• :-Wanganui,. Aug.- 22> ■ The intcr, college Rugby tournament opened here' to-day. Wellington Colleoe defeated Nelson College by 9 points to°3 and : Christ’^, College and Wanganui Collegiate School drew with 6 points each. .

The ground and the weather were splendid. The standard of Rugby was not what was \ expected from school teams. Wellington was a much heavier side than Nelson, and although no tries were scored in this match, the winners owed their victory to the weight of the van and ability to profit after quick smothering, actions against the Nelson backs in "possession. Nelson did most of the attacking by reason of the fact that the hookers got the ball in the set scrums, but the backs lacked resource. The once exception was Karsten, second five-eighths. ■ O’Loughlin kicked three penalties for Wellington, one in the first spell and the other two in the second, and Stace kicked a penalty goal for,Nelson. The score at half-time was three to nil in favour of Wellington.

Though the match ended in a draw, Christ’s College should have beaten Wanganui Collegiate School. The Christchurch team did most of the attacking, but; though the defence was weakened in places, could not succeed. Mistakes made at critical moments were the ■team’s undoing. Christ’s crossed, the Wanganui line, but a previous infringement robbed them of another try. Qresson scored a try for Christ’s in the first spell, and Bunny kicking a penalty goal for Wanganui evened the scores at halftime. J. H. Coleman crossed the line and put Wanganui three points in the lead in the second spell, Christ’s equalising points coming from a penalty goal kicked by Arthur. Nelson will play Christ’s College on Monday and Wellington will play Wanganui.
