MOTOR DELEGATES’ DINNER

ENTERTAINMENT AT HAWERA.

REFERENCES TO MOTOR Delegates to the.. North Island Motor Union conference Were entertained by the South Taranaki Automobile Association at a complimentary dinner in the Rewa rooms on Friday evening, when Mr. S. C. Tonks presided over a large gathering. Proposing the toast of the North Island Motor Union Mr. F. W. Freeman (South Island Union) complimented the North Island Union upon its progressive policy as evidenced in the servicing and the. provision of a wide range of facilities by its constituent automobile associations. The safety first campaign and the insurance company were instanced -as typical of the initiative of the North Island Union. The motor unions represented such large numbers of all classes of people that there was no other section so closely interwoven with public affairs, and tlie North Island union had eet a remarkable precedent in advocating advantages for all its members. The union’s activities were illustrated when the length of the main highways in the North Island was compared with the shorter lengths in the .South. Mr. Freeman paid a tribute to the president (Mr. W. A. O’Callaghau) and the secretary (Mr. W. G. Walkley) for the excellence of their efforts. Mr. A. Grayson (Auckland) said in response that his early experience of New Zealand roads had convinced him that those of the South Island were the better. The rapid growth of- the North Island and the remarkable improvement of its roads seemed to indicate that the southern counties had not been so active. Tho change in conditions for North Island motorists from the time when individual counties placed their own cartaxation had been largely due to the activities of. the Motor Union.

Other delegates who responded to the toast were Messrs. J. H. Edmundson (Hawke's Bay), H. E. Edmunds (Manawatu), F. Amoore (Taranaki), R. W. Roydhouse (Wairarapa), D. Macfarlane (Wanganui), E. A. Batt (Wellington) ami Dr. W. T. Simmons (South Taranaki). ' “The South Island Motor Union'’ was proposed by Mr. W. A. O’Callaghan. Responding, Mr. J. S. Hawkes referred to the hospitality extended by the South Taranaki Association. Appreciation of the efforts of Mr. M. H. Wynyard, the motorists’ representative on the Main Highways Board, was expressed by the speaker in referring to the improvements being effected to South Island roads. The co-operation between the two unions was mentioned by Mr. F. W. Freeman, who also replied. In sketching the early history of the motor associations he said it was only the sound policies adopted by the early meetings of the North Island union that had made possible the present sound position in which the associations found themselves.

Mr. G. W. Hutchison (Auckland), in prßposing the toast of the “North Island Motor Union Mutual Insurance Company,” said that Mr. Ivon Wilson had founded a company in the face of considerable opposition. That company was now on a. sound footing and had already been the result of considerable saving in premiums for the motorist members.

Response was made by Mr. Ivon Wilson, chairman of directors.

“The Hosts” was proposed by Mr. M. H, Wynyard, who said the South Taranaki Association had provided a lesson in entertainment. The president of the association, Mr. S. C. Tonks, replied. “The Ladies” was proposed by Dr. Robertson and replied to by Mr. A. Warburton (Wellington).
