repairs to the roads. USE of unemployed men. The monthly meeting of the Eltham Borough Council was heM last night. The foreman reported that the earth formation required in straightening portion of Clifford Road was completed and would be metalled soon. The remaining portion would be scarified, re-graded and clay-blinded. Metal patching was carried out on Clifford Road, Conway Road, Preston Street, Cornwall Street and West Street. Water-tabling was beina done throughout the borough and backing up the sides of the tarred surfaces -with tuff from paths was being carried out where required. Removal of the turf and grading of paths was carried out on Bridger Street, Kitchener Street, Conway Road and Moir Street near the railway station. Screenings from the county depot was spread on Mill, King Edward, Moir, London and Bridge Street West. Unemployment relief work was being found for a number of men working under No. 5 scheme. Their employment consists of clearing the undergrowth from the trees ir. the plantation and cleaning - the paths at the cemetery, planting young trees and removing the fern on the Memorial Park, tidying about the bush and laying down flower both; in Tauinata Par’ , pruning the of-" namental trees on the streets, grading paths, water-tabling, draining aud earthwork.

The health inspector reported that no cases of infectious diseases were reported during t’.e month. Ten visits were made to habitations and seven to food sellers, and three requisitions were served.

Tne treasurer reported that revenue for the month was £1279 Ils. The expenditure was £1231. The district fund account showed a debit of £1230 Us 3d.

It was resolved that a supply of black earth be obtained to level the hockey grounds. It was also decided to clean the reserve at the Soldiers’ Memorial Park and plant suitable trees. The works committee recommended that the council agree to the suggestion from the county council that a commission be set up to settle the question of the apportionment of maintenance of boundary roads. Guard fences are to ’be erected at the approaches to Conway Road bridge. The pictures committee reported that the talkies were showing as favourable return as could be expected at this time of the year.* . Certain improvements were to *be made to the supper room ’ give greater facilities to the users. It was resolved to supply the necessary metal for the construction of the bandstand in the children’s park.

- It was reported that the Returned Soldiers’ Association had made satisfactory arrangements regarding the distribution of Poppy Day funds.

WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED.

NO. 4A TO BE RESUMED.

The Stratford Unemployment Committee has been advised by the Unemployment Commissioner that scheme No. 4A. will be resumed on October 1. This scheme was suspended from August 31. When the scheme resumes on October 1 the board has decided that the labour employed must be for developmental work only, and the labour must in every case be additional to that which would otherwise be employed. Seasonal work such as milking, sharemilking, haymaking, harvesting, or that pertaining to the lambing and shearing seasons, for which labour has usually been employed, will not be subsidised. In any case coming under the notice of the committee where these requirements are not being strictly adhered to the contract must be terminated immediately. The subsidy payable when the scheme resumes will be 10s per week for single men and 20s per week for married men. The term of the engagement must not be less than four weeks or more than 20 weeks. The amount of the subsidy may be altered at any time during that period by the direction of the board. The Stratford committee is prepared to consider applications, but it must be understood that the subsidy 1 will not be payable until October 1.

NEW AMATEUR ATHLETIC CENTRE.

APPROVAL OF STRATFORD CLUB.

The committee of the Stratford Amateur Athletic Club has approved the suggested formation of a Mid-North Island Centre to control amateur athletic activities in the districts of Taranaki, Wanganui, Hawke’s Bay and Manawatu. The secretary of the Stratford club (Mr. J. Stephens) in discussing the proposal said it would be necessary shortly to call a meeting of delegates from all Taranaki amateur clubs for the purpose of setting up an executive, electing a chairman and secretary and appointing delegates to the new centre. The New Zealand council, he said,, would meet in Wellington on September 10, after which some definite steps could be taken to organise the new centre.
