URENUI ANGLICAN CHURCH BALZn, MANY FANCY DRESSES WORN. „ The annual plain and fancy dress ball was conducted by the Church of England on Wednesday in the Urenui hall and was a success from all points of view. There was a large attendance of visitors from all parts of North Taranaki. The door receipts amounted to over £3O and as'the expenses were small the church should benefit considerably. The ballroom was decorated with green and yellow streamers with baskets of flowers suspended from the ceiling. The stage had been decorated with horseshoe ferns and bowls of jonquils and daffodils, while the supper tables looked particularly inviting, the decorations be-, ing jonquils and maidenhair fern. The fancy costumes were well up to the standard of former years and among those present in “hard up” and fancy dress were: Mesdames C. Bleakley (Fire), G. Rogers (Basket of Flowers), R. E, Rogers (10 per cent Cut), N. Taylor (Hawaiian Girl), V. March (Arabian Bride), 11. Grylls (Yardley’s Lavender), K. Blundell (Red Riding Hood), R. Julian (Primrose Pierette I, E. Godfrey (Bag of Bon Bons), G. Carr (Victorian Period), and D. Butt (Powder and Patches), Misses K. Riley (Black and White Pierette), M. Riley (Rost), J. Smith (Plantagenet Lady), D. Newton (Spring), L. Wells (Irish Colleen), R. Griffiths (Highwayman's Daughter), Z. Sheard (Hard Up), W. Orudis (Joker), P. Haleombe (1900), and J. Oxenham (Rainbow- Pierette), Messrs. A. Strickland (Rainbow- Pierrot), Bert Taylor (Clown),. R. Oxenham (Mephistophels), R. Larsen (Robinson Crusoe), V. Jones and W. Fraser (Mr. and Mrs.iAlsatian), A. Pepperell (Toreador), N. Brown (Mephistophels). Mesdames A. Blackley and P. Webster made the following awards: Ladies’ fancy. Miss W. Crudis 1, Mrs. H. Grylls 2, Mrs. G. Rogers 3, Miss P. Haleombe 4, Mrs. E. Godfrey 5, Miss Joan Smith 6, Miss “Tambourine” 7, Miss Richardson 8, Mrs. C. Bleakley 9; Ladies’ “hard up,” Mrs. R. E. Rogers 1, Miss Z. Sheard 2; men’s fancy, Mr. R. Larsen 1, Messrs. V. Jones and W. Fraser 2, Messrs. R. Oxenham and N. Brown ,3, Mr. A. Pepperell 5. The duty of presenting the prizes fell to the lot‘of the Ven. Archdeacon G. H. Gavin, who congratulated the judges on their decisions and the many prize-win-ners on their splendid efforts. A feature of the evening was the fancy dancing by Miss Elwyn Riley. After her perfoimalice Miss Peggy Hal-, combe presented Miss Riley with a bouquet of spring flowers and maidenhair fern. Mrs. R. H. Pigott (secretary), Mesdames Clarke, Managli, Thompson, G. Pigott, D. Wiley, P. Elliott, C. Bleakley, Fuller, W. Pigott, Dunbar, Carr, Mooney and Wilson, Misses Pigott and Haleombe worked hard to make the ball a success. Messrs. F. Clarke and C. Hehwood were masters of ceremonies. Boulton's dance band supplied the music. The committee thanked Mesdames Blackley and Webster for judging the fancy costumes, and Miss Elwyn Riley for judging the -waltzing competition, which was won by Mr. J. Thompson and Mrs. J. Fitzgerald. A competition conducted by Miss Peggy Haleombe was won by Mr. Ibbotson.

DISTRIBUTION OF QUAKE FUND. A meeting of the Urenui earthquake relief committee was held on Monday night, Mr. A. H. Halcombe presiding. Th® treasurer stated that £243 4s 5d had been donated and £lOO Itad been paid to the New Plymouth Red Cross committee and £7 19s 7d for immediate relief to refugees - in the district, leaving a balanee in hand of £135 4s lOd. It was unanimously decided to divide the remaining funds equally between th® Church of England, Presbyterian, Methodist, Roman Catholic and Salvation Army ministers in Napier and Hastings for distress among their parishioners. The chairman mentioned it was very gratifying to see such a generous response by the Urenui district, and ho f thought by handing over the remaining funds to the ministers of religion in Napier and Hastings the committee wa# adopting a wise course, as the ministers were more in touch with distress and they would see that the most urgent cases were oared for. Wtih the milking season advancing th® ’ Urenui Club is having difficulty in fielding teams for the competition, and in consequence the second juniors travelled to New Plymouth with only 13 players last Saturday. Nevertheless they put up a very good performance andwere defeated by Tukapa by only 5 points to 4, a converted try to a field goal by L. Herbert. The first juniors had a bye ,and are now third on the ladder with 14 points; matches played 10, won 7, lost 3, points for 82, 'against 58. The second' juniors are also third with 11 points; matches played 11, won 5, drawn 1, lost 5, points for 57, against 69. Three silver cups in the district field competitions are on display in one of < the local windows. They have been won by Messrs. R. Andrews (swedes), W. J. Frceth (ensilage), and J. F. Phillips and. Sons (hay). These cups and several medals will be presented at the Farmers’ Union dance in the Urenui hall on SepsS tember 3. PERSONAL ITEMS, Miss Mavis Elliot Is visiting friendi at Taihape. Mi’s.
