MARRIED WOMEN TEACHERS
TRANSFER APPLICATIONS. BOARD FACE-S NEW PROBLEM. Following upon- the ruling given by Mr. Justice Herdman that an education board had no' power to dismiss a mari tied woman. teacher, but could refrain from-appointing one, the question has arisen, what is the position of the married woman teacher in the service who applies for a new position? The point was considered at a meeting of. the Auckland Education Board on Wednesday, when two married women teachers asked for advice about their applications for other appointments.
Mr. S. B. Sims said that if the board was consistent it would refuse to appoint to fresh positions married womeir who had husbands to support them. “It-is a difficult position,” said Mr. H. S. W. King. “If the board takes up a definite stand, it may conflict with the Supreme Conrt’s interpretation.” He suggested that the matter should be referred to the Minister of Education.
It was decided to defer action .pending receipt of a statement from ths Minister.
