HEBREW MINISTRY
RABBI KATZ RETURNS. WELLINGTON APPOINTMENT. An arrival by the Niagara from Vancouver at Auckland on Monday . was Rabbi Solomon Katz, who is to succeed the late Rabbi Van Staveren in Wellington. From 1911 to 1920 he was assist-, •ant to Rabbi Goldstein in Auckland and during the last nine years he has been | carrying out pastoral duties in the United States, first at Birmingham, Alabama, and during the last three years at New Rochelle, New York, where I ae was Rabbi of the Hebrew Institute. Rabbi Katz has been attending the I Jewish Theological Seminary of America | He is a member of the Rabbinical Assembly of America and a member of the New York Board of Jewish Ministers.. “I have led . a very busy , life in America,”., said .Rabbi Katz.: *'A rabbi there is more than a preacher; 1 he is the' movingnrspirit * aof: his'i i,i: eongregatmn,. supervising educational work, arranging the social solidarity of the young, en-
gaging in charitable work, lecturing on the public platform and, in some con-: gregations, watching over the finances. Education, in fact, is an extremely important part of his work and he is called ? ■upon to conduct classes for children and adults in addition to his pastoral work. I cannot say what direction will be given to my work in Wellington, but I shall probably concentrate on Jewish education in the larger sense of the term.”
