REBUILDING OF NAPIER

SITES READY FOR BUILDING. SHOPS AND OFFICES REPAIRED. Napier, July 30. The clearing away of ruined business premises is still continuing steadily in the business area of Napier, and considerably more than half of the total number of sites are now in readiness for the erection of new buildings or the reconditioning of the few structures which are capable of being repaired. Rebuilding has not yet beeu commenced in real earnest by any means, but already quite a number of offices and shops have been reconditioned, while there are many others for which contracts have been let. No property owners have so far received any Government assistance, and those who have already taken steps to rehabilitate themselves have done so out of their own resources. Dickens Street, now that it is the principal business street of the town, has come in for most of the building activities. As the street escaped only with earthquake damage and was not troubled with the effects of fire, most of the buildings only need reconditioning. There are many other property owners awaiting assistance from the Government and th© completion of legal formalities. A promising start has been made, and the indications are that by next summer the devastated area of Napier will be a hive of building activity. -
