CYCLONIC GALE IN TASMAN

STEAMER KARTIGI BUFFETED.

LITTLE PROGRESS POSSIBLE.

By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.

Sydney, July 31. A westerly gale developed with almost cyclonic force over the Tasman Sea. The steamer Kartigi, from Auckland to Sydney, has been delayed about two days. With her engines set at full speed ahead she has been battling with the wind and waves, and has been able to progress at only three knots. Radio messages from the captain stated that the ship had struck the full force of the gale and could make little headway.
