A CLEAN MOUTH. ESSENTIAL TO HEALTH. “It would be a mighty good thing, but it would be a tremendous task,’’ said Dr. A. Paterson, when speaking of the introduction of the American “O.K. systeni” into New Zealand schools. In America the ideal is that every school-child should have a clean or “0.K.” mouth, and when a school attains that goal a holiday is granted by the president. The Americans have been working on the scheme /or .35 years, Dr. Paterson said. In cities like Chicago 300 or 400 dentists gave four hours a day, free, to the care of children’s teeth. In addition, almost every city had its dental hospital, where there were from 100 to 400 students, and these devoted eight hours a day to the people’s teeth. Children were educated in dental hygiene and would themselves go to the dentist if a tooth were troublesome. In some of the most expensive private schools pupils would not be accepted unless they had “0.K.” mouths. New Zealand had neither the money nor the dentists to attain such fine results, but he suggested that individual schools or even a class in a school might aim at securing “O.K.’’ dental certificates.
