BEAUTIFYING NEW PLYMOUTH

ANNUAL MEETING OF SOCIETY. DEBIT BALANCE REPORTED. A meeting of the New Plymouth Beautifying Society- was held at the office of the president, Mr. R. C. Hughes, on Thursday. The president’s report was adopted as also was the treasurers report. The latter showed a balance of £ll Os lOd on the wrong side, the expenditure having exceeded the income. A vote of thanks to Messrs Duncan and Davies was carried in recognition oi their unfailing generosity in providing -trees and shrubs. and flowering plants whenever required. Mr. Horne was also thanked for his valued help in supervising unemployed workers and for his constant interest in the grounds. On the motion of Mrs. Brewster a vote of thanks to the president was also passed. Appreciation was expressed of the kindness of the ladies who had provided afternoon teas. The experience of the society for the past year had not varied from that of previous years-, stated the annual report. The work had fallen upon a few. They had managed, however, to keep the reserve in fair order. That result could not have been achieved, owing to the want of voluntary labour ai.l to lack of funds, if it had not been for the valuable help received from the Returned Soldiers’ Association, whose secretary, Mr. E. J. Carr, had been of great assistance. More attention had been o-iven to keeping the paths in good oi der. The borough authorities had ,assisted by supplying a quantity of good oravel. It was much to be regretted that so little help wa.- forthcoming from the young ineii of the town. It would not" be difficult to show that hours spent in looking on in this wintry weather at a football match could bo more profitably employed. The debit balance of £ll Os lOd was due to the treasurer for advances for wages and current expenses.
