URENUI NEWS

. FOOTBALL TEAM’S RECORD. (From Our Own Correspondent). The Mimi school committee’s fortnightly euchre party and dance was held on Tuesday evening. There was a very ' fair attendance and an enjoyable evening was spent. Competition was very keen among the ladies, and no fewer than four tied for the first prize with ten games each, the prize eventually going to Mrs. A. Hutchins after playing off with Mesdames G. Baker, C. Willison and Miss M. Willison. Mr. H. Baker was successful in winning the men’s prize with eleven games. The Urenui first junior football team was again successful in defeating the Clifton team at Urenui last Saturday by 6 points to 3. Tries were scored for Urenui by V. Laurent and J. Lambert. The second juniors travelled to New Plymouth and were defeated by the Star team by 14 points to nil. The local boys are to be commended on the way they have stuck together .this season. The team is drawn from a very wide area and the only opportunity they have of gaining combination is in competition games. Their record to date is nine games, four wins, one draw and four losses; points for 53, against 64. Early lambs are reported in the district and with the few mild days this week pastures are beginning to show signs of a fair, growth. General sympathy is felt in this district with the relatives of Mrs. George Elliott, who passed away at Levin on Thursday morning. Mrs. Elliot was a daughter-in-law of Mr. Samuel Elliot, who resided at Onaero for a number of years. BOWLING CLUB’S MEETING.

The president, Mr. S. Topless, presided over an attendance of 15 members at the annual meeting of the Urenui Bowling Club. The president presented the annual report, -which• stated that the 1930-31 season closed with a financial membership of 20, and two new members had since been added. Two rinks were entered for the North Taranaki competitions and, as was only, to be expected for a club in its first season’s play, only one match was won. Lateness in commencing play did not permit of the club’s singles competition for the Hardwicke -bowls being finalised, and it was suggested the competition 'be replayed under fresh handicaps during the forthcoming season. The pairs competition, the trophies for which were donated by Mr. W* H. Fuller, had also to be deferred. A pavilion in concrete, subsidiary buildings and entrance gates had been provided since the previous annual meeting, in connection with which the club had to thank Messrs. Henley, Pigott and others for free labour. The pavilion was quite equal to any other in Taranaki, and all necessary material was available except a lawn mower. The green would have to be redressed to be ready for the coming season. Given an adequate membership, the club should, in the near future, be a self-supporting institution. The question of securing additional members was urgent. If only two rinks were playing'in competitions the rest of the membership was left at a loose end on at least- half of the playing Saturdays, and interest was sure to flag. The annual ball was very successful financially and otherwise, showing a net profit of £l7 14s 6d. The heartiest thanks were due to Mrs. Pigott and hex- ladies’ committee for this substantial result. The ladies also were to be thanked most heartily for their lavish entertainment of visitors and members on the occasion of the official opening and subsequent home matches. The committee thanked the president fox- his active interest, Mr. Pigott, who had worked freely on the pavilion and as green warden, Mr. A. Gibson fox- his generous gift of special hinges fox- the entrance gates, Messrs. Sampson and Fuller- (Waitara) and Messrs. Doughty and Carrington (of the fire brigade) fox- much assistance in top-dressing the green, and the Waitara Bowling Club for the use of a xnoxver.

The following officers were elected:—■ President, Mr. R. H. Pigott; vice-presi-dent, Mr. W. H. Fuller; executive committee, Messrsl S. Topless, G. Loveridge, S. A. Managh, J. F. Phillips and T. H. Lee; secretary, Mr. F. G. Healey; treasurer, Mr. G. N. Fuller; auditor, Mr. J. W. Hamlin; gree nwarden, Mr. R. H. Pigott, with a committee consisting of Messrs. Des Forges, Loveridge and Healey; selector, Mr. F. G. Healey; delegate, Mr. S. Topless; handicapper, Mr. F. G. Healey. A hearty vote of thanks fox- their services was accorded the following retiring officers: Messrs. S. Topless (president), L. Biclxeno (secretary) and J. Guthrie and G. Salway (executive committee). It was decided to hold a working bee on the greexx next Wednesday at 10 a.m. It was decided that all members be invited to play in club matches irrespective of their capabilities - in order- to stimulate interest amongst players.
