JUNIOR RUGBY FOOTBALL

CARDIFF SCORES HEAVILY. STERN DEFENCE BY STRATFORD. Play in the central division junior Rugby competition was continued yesterday in fine weather that was marred by a cold wind. Results are:— 1 First Juniors. Cardiff 22 v. Stratford 10. Toko 8 v. Inglewood 0. Pukengahu 14 v. Celtic 6. Third Grade. Midhirst forfeited to Inglewood on account of the Gerrard Cup tournament. Weakened to the extent where they had to call upon four players from their fourth grade team, Stratford played remarkably well against the heavier Cardiff forwards, and scores were even, six all, at half-time. Cardiff owed their subsequent rapid accumulation of points to their fast and continuous following up. Early in the game Butcher placed a good penalty goal for Stratford, which was equalised by a try by H. Lehmann after a pretty piece of inverse passing. Clever handling preceded Cardiff’s next try. Babbington had the ball sent back to him from a line-out and sent a quick pass to Redshaw. Beating his opponent, Redshaw gave the ball to Lehmann, who ''sent it infield again to Hancock and thence to Spannon, who scored. Bennett’s kick* sent the ball just outside the goal. Stratford attacked with vigour in both divisions, and P. Collins, neatly fielding when a cross kick was re-turned, sent Tubby racing for the line. Tubby made a lot’ of ground before passing infield to Collins. Collins scored. Interesting play followed the resumption, but Arthur was caught in possession. Cardiff were soon swarming about the line. Here M. Sullivan was badly off-side, and Bennett made no mistake with an easy kick. To H. Lehmann fell the honour of Cardiff’s next try when, attended by Huckstep and Verney, he out-manoeuvred the Stratford backs and raced over unopposed with ball at his feet. Bennett added the major points. Cardiff now had a lead of eight points which was presently increased to 13 when Lehmann and Verney for the second time ran over in a dribbling rush. Verney was tackled while he was still running after the ball, and the referee awarded a try. Just to be certain about it, however, Lehmann touched down also. Again • Bennett converted, and a few minutes later kicked a fine penalty goal. In the dying stages Stratford rallied well, especially after Watson made a remarkable break-away over more than half the field, and just before time P. Colins potted a goal, leaving the scores Cardiff 22, Stratford 1.0. Mr. H. Harrison refereed. TEN-A-SIDE RUGBY. ( TOURNAMENT AT MIDHIRST.
