FIVE OVERCOME BY GAS
TRAGEDY IN ESSEX TUNNEL
OTHER SHAFTS SAFELY SUNK
WARNING COMES TOO LATE
FALL TO BASE OF CYLINDER
By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 5:5 p.m. London, July 25.
Five men were killed in the underriver tunnel at the Ford works at Dagenham, Essex. They were overcome by gas and pitched into the water at the bottom of the cylinder. The dead include the foreman, William O’Donnell, aged 26, who first detected gas and shouted a warning. The night shift apparently disturbed an old refuse heap, producing carbon di-oxide gas, which was not expected, as several Other shafts had been safely sunk. Firemen wearing gas masks brought the bodies to the surface. The dead included two brothers.
