SPORT ON MOUNT EGMONT

SNOWBALLING AND TOBOGGANING,

Over fifty seats were booked at Messrs. Kleeman and Bishop’s garage for the free trip to the Stratford resort yesterday afternoon, but when a light though steady rain set in a few cancelled their reservations. Nevertheless two full trucks made the journey and over 30 visitors arrived at the house. In addition a number of private cars made the trip. Had the afternoon remained fine over 100 people would have availed themselves of the opportunity. Fortunately for those who braved the elements the atmosphere was so cold on the mountain that the rain froze as soon as it reached the ground. Thus the fine dry snow did not change to thawing conditions and the visitors were able to enjoy ski-ing, tobogganing and. snowballing. In fact, they thoroughly enjoyed the experience and many stated their intention of going again during the weekend. The custodian of the houses reports that accommodation is fully booked for Saturday and Sunday, and it is expected that over 50 people will be at the resort. The Stratford Mountain Club also intends to make the Stratford houses the rendezvous for a week-end tramp. PERSONAL ITEMS. The annual meeting of the Taranaki Employers’ Union held at Stratford yesterday passed a motion of condolence with thewith the wife and family of the late Air. A. W. Budge, Stratford. Air. Martin Davis, Inglewood, was appointed to fill the vacancy in the Taranaki Employers’ Union executive caused by the death of Mr. A. W. Budge. The annual meeting yesterday re-elected the former executive. GENERAL ITEMS. The Rev. A. J. Beck, acting vicar, was formally welcomed at a recent meeting of the Eltham Anglican Church vestry. Air. Linnell expressed the hope that the vicar’s stay in the parish would be a pleasant one. The vicar thanked the speaker for his welcome and said he would do all he could good of the parish. The certificates obtained in the home nursing section ,by Eltham Red Cross class students were presented by the president, Air. I. J. Bridger, at a social evening on Tuesday. He expressed appreciation of the interest Sister Ingles had taken in the class and congratulated her on the number of pupils who had gained certificates as the result of her careful tuition. These were Alesdames R. Darling, E. Fletcher,' T. Austin, J. Fairborough, J. Alitchell, Misses L. Thomas, Salmon (2), Peters, Lambert, Robinson, L. McLean and Owen. Mrs. Mitchell also received a four-years’ badge.

The few spectators who braved the rain and the cold to witness the TokoMidhirst football clash yesterday were treated to the unusual sight of a fullback doing his best to repulse attacks dressed in street clothes covered with a long oil-skin overcoat and complete with soft hat. It appeared that Midhirst were one man short and a supporter of the team cheerfully volunteered to fill the position until the regular. player arrived.

Eltham ladies beat Inglewood at Eltham yesterday by five goals to nil. The scorers were L. Potts (2), B. Campbell, R. Potts and R. Reakes.

Mr. L. Page and Miss A. Cooper won a waltzing competition for which Mr. O. Manley was the judge at the Eltham Oddfellows’ dance on Wednesday evening. Mr. McDonald and Mrs. O. Manley won a Monte Carlo.
