TEACHERS’ EMPLOYMENT
PROPOSALS OF THE MINISTER DEPARTMENT’S EYE FOR FUTURE. FEWER RELIEVING APPOINTMENTS. By Tel«rraph.—Pres» AzMoeiatiofl. Wellington, Last Night. Employment of school teachers was briefly referred to in the House of Representatives this afternoon by the Minister of Education, the Hon. 11. Atmore. Replying to Mr. V. A. Ward (United, Invercargill), Mr. Atmore said in view of the financial stringency it would be necessary to restrict to some extent the, employment of relieving teachers, and until the financial position improved it would not be possible to employ them as freely as in the past. It was proposed to reduce somewhat the number of probationers to be appointed next year on account of the number of unemployed teachers, Mr. Atmore said, but the effect would not be evident till 1936 aS the course of training occupied four years. The average number of teachers who retired from the service annually was known and each year the department had estimated as accurately as possible the number of teachers it would be necessary to train io make good the staff wastage in the sfer 1 vice five years later. There would be, a shortage of teachers to fill the vacancies in 1936 if the numbers of probations were reduced too much in 1932.
