The first figures of the census taken on April 16 have been issued by the RegistrarGeneral to-day. They show the total population of England and Walfes as 39,048,000, an increase since the Inst census in 1921 of 2,061,000. Females preponderate, being 20,800,000 in number. The density is 695 persons per square mile. The population of Scotland'is 4,800,000, making the total for Great Britain nearly 45,000,000. The tables show the number of births registered as 6,930,000, compared with 8,281,000 at the 1921 census, and the figure is the lowest recorded since 1881. The death rate is also lower. The census reveals the growth in the population of London, which is now over 8,000,000, with a tendency for the outer suburbs to increase at the expense of the “County of London” area. With the socalled outer ring, the total London population reaches 12,000,000.
