STRATFORD WINTER SHOW

OFFICIAL OPENING BY MAYOR.

CEREMONY TO-MORROW NIGHT.

The Mayor of Stratford _ (Mr. P. Thomson) will perform the official opening ceremony at the Stratford winter show at 8 o’clock to-morrow night, Mr. W. J. Polson, M.P., having notified hi<s inability to be present owing to the annual conference of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union in Wellington this week. ,Arrangements have been made for the Stratford Municipal Band to be in attendance on the first three nights of the show and for the Stratford Pipe Band to parade the town' and attend the show on Saturday night. The scene in Messrs. Kleeman and Bishop’s garage, Broadway North, the venue for the show, was a busy one yesterday when members' of the general committee were preparing the space to accommodate the exhibits for the show which opens to-morrow afternoon. The stands for the poultry section are already erected, and work was being concentrated on the cages, where Mr. Cliff Murray was in charge. The root section in charge of Mr. Max Gernhoefer ■will be placed in the big hall at the rear, and carpenters were busy making the stands. Exhibitors of industrial displays and sideshowmen were also engaged on their own particular jobs. The president (Mr. A, J. Davey), in supervising the general arrangements, was among the busiest workers.

UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF.

STRATFORD COMMITTEE MEETS.

“That the Government be urged to utilise unemployed labour in opening up to the width of 12 feet the Mangere Road, ' which connects the Whangamomona and Uruti districts, thereby not only benefiting both districts by o-ivintr them direct access but also givTno- proper access to eight settlers who have farmed their land successfully for 25 years under the disabilities arising from a narrow and dangerous track,’ was a motion for which the Stratford executive of the Farmers’ Union sought the support of the Stratford Unemployment Committee at its meeting last night. Mr. N. B. Fletcher presided. “This is more a job for the Public Works Department,” said the chairman. “Years ago the settlers made representations to the work done.” The settlers were over 40 miles from the railway at Waitara, the chairman said, but if the road were put through they would have access to Whangamomona eight miles away. He had been over the track, which was an extremely rough one. about 4 feet wide traversing hiny country. It had been estimateci that to build a road, over that eight miles would cost £2OOO per mile. , , Mr. H. A. Hunt said the settlers had to pack their wool out. A camp could be established, he thought, and single men could be put on the job and given six-days’ work a week at a small daily wage. . i “It would be only tinkering with the iob to put unemployed on it,” said the Mayor, Mr. P. Thomson. To do the work according to estimate will cost £16,000. ’ Interest on that at 5 per cent, would be £BOO per year, ’ besides the annual charge for upkeep on the road. Is that expense justified ?” Mr. E. Marfell thought the unemployment scheme should be modified to permit men •to go into camp and to stay on one job. The chairman saw no harm in forwarding the motion. That was done. The chairman, Messrs. Thomson and Marfell were appointed a sub-committee to deal with the weekly grants from the Unemployment Board.
