A German Customs officer shot and critically wounded an Alsatian innkeeper named George, who was fishing without a license in the Rhine with a gamekeeper named Furst, both residents of Aanzehu. The current carried them within 50 yards of the German bank. An official sprang up and shouted: “Are you Germans?” They replied “Yes,” but their Alsatian accent betrayed them. They disobeyed an order to land, whereupon the official fired his revolver, thrice wounding George near the heart. Furst rowed to the French bank [and rushed his com'panion to hospital. . The Franco-German police have opened :an inquiry.
