UNEMPLOYMENT TAXATION
I PROBABLE FATE OF THE BILL
SERIOUS OPPOSITION UNLIKELY. DEMAND FOR WOMEN’S BENEFITS. (By Wire—Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Last Night. The reception accorded the Unemployment Amendment Bill when it was introduced in tho House seemed to indicate that it would have a stormy passage, but the tone of tlie second reading debate and opinions canvassed in lobbies oossip with members afford promise that “the measure will not be subjected to factious opposition and that in its general principles it will be endorsed by the House. The urgency for legislation to carry oh relief schemes with AS little delay as possible is generally recognised, and the Bill is being approached in that spirit. It is understood the Labour Party intends to press for the exemption of relief and lower-paid workers from the payment of the levy, but it is unlikely that the committee proceedings will be prolonged by “stonewall” tactics. ,
Guarantees will be sought by some members that unemployed women will derive definite benefits as the result of their being brought under the Act. There is every promise that the measure will be finalised by the House on Wednesday.
