SCHEMES OF RELIEF WORK
OBJECTION RAISED BY FARMERS. INSUFFICIENCY OF NO. 48. MAX. Speaking on the matter of the operation of the 4B unemployment schema to a Daily News reporter, Mr. M. G Trotter, president of the Stratford subprovincial executive of the Farmers 1 Union, explained that the objection hia organisation had to the scheme was that of £1 spent in wages the Unemployment Board only found 6s Bd, while th« farmer had to pay 13s 4d, yet country districts did not secure anything like the benefits which went to towns through the operation of the No. 5 scheme. The 4B scheme, he thought should be Scrapped in favour of some additional scheme, under which work could be done in the country as freely ae at present it was done in the towns under the No. 5 scheme.
For the purposes of such a scheme Mr. Trotter urged that of its available funds the Unemployment Board should allocate a great deal more for works of country development, even if to do so meant reducing the amount available under the No. 5 scheme. He pointed out that the £6400 claimed by the board io have been spent on the 4B scheme was infinitesimal compared with the thousands spent weekly on the No. 5 scheme.
