PLUNKET SOCIETY’S CONCERT.

(From Our Own Correspondents There was a capacity house at Kaponga Town Hall on Friday, when a concert was presented by the Kaponga branch of the Plunket Society. The programme was commenced with the overture “On to Triumph,” by the orchestra, and the first half of the entertainment was provided entirely by children from the Kaponga State and Convent schools. The numbers were; —Chorus, by Kaponga State school pupils, ‘Come Lasses and Lads”; “Gavotte Ballet” by pupils of Miss Peggy Wylds; recitation, “.the Blacksmith,” by Roe Dawson; a dialogue, “My Best Possession,” by Convent school pupils; action song and dance, “The Rag Doll,” Kaponga State school pupils, (In this the performers were attired as rag dolls, with faces front and back, and combined with actions it presented highly amusing attitudes). The Kaponga Boy Scouts presented the Dominion Boy Scouts haka, followed by an action song, “Maori Canoe,” by the State school pupils. A character duet, “Coon Song,” presented by Kaponga State school infant pupils, captivated the audience. A pianoforte duet, “The Grand Viteise,” played by Misses Joan and Nita Bolger, and a solo dance, “Little Jack Horner,” by Miss June Thurston, completed the first portion. • The orchestra played an entr acte, “New Zealand,” and the concert was carried on by adult performers from Eltham, Opunake and Kaponga. The first number was presented by Miss Peggy Wylds and pupils, “Balloon” ballet/followed by a pianoforte duet, “Invitation to the Waltz,” by Mrs. Blennerhasset and Miss Muriel Evans. Miss Myrtle Evans presented a soprano solo, “Dream of Home,” and as an encore gave “Carmencita.” A vocal duet, “Battle Eve,” by Messrs. W. Hey and H. Gallagher, was followed by a violin solo, “Londonderry Airs,” by Mrs. Watt. Mr. Fred Silver gave a humorous number, “House to Let,” and received a great ovation. As an encore he gave “The Musical Barber,” and ‘had to respond to a further persistent call, giving “Our Garden Subub.” Miss Phreita Anderson gave an elocutionary number, “The Listeners,” and “A Good Girl.” Mrs. J. A. Rankin sang “The Glory of the Sun” and as an encore “The Hills of Donegal.” Miss Gubb gave a musical monologue, “The Three Trees,” and “Shut Up.” Mr. S. Carson sang “The Drum Major,” and an encore “Old Fashioned Town.”

A further ballet by Miss Wylds and pupils was followed by a mezzo-soprano solo, “The Three Fishers,” by Mrs. W. McCook, and “Just a’Wearying For You.”

Mr. Leo Abbott, the stage manager, tendered thanks on behalf of the society to those who had generously given their services and whose help had made the concert a success. He thanked the teachers of the State School and the Sisters of the Convent School for their splendid work in training the pupils. The Plunket Society was always in need of funds to enable it to carry on the good work, and it was very gratifying to them to know that they had the support of the public. The final number was a humoroue quartette “Pro fundo Basso,” the artists being the Misses Muriel and Myrtle Evans and Messrs. Gallagher and Hey. The orchestra was composed of the following: Piano, Mrs. Evans; violins, Mrs. Watt, Miss M. Blennerhassett, Mr. Reg. Hill; ’cello, Mrs. Barley; bass, Mr. H. Gallagher; cornet, Mr. L. Wills; trombone, Mr. K. Albon. Accompaniments were played by Mrs. Blennerhassett, Mrs. Evans, Miss Irene Brewer and Miss Gubb. The artiste and friends were entertained at supper by the Plunket Society.
