SIR W. WATERLOW DEAD
NOTABLE CAREER ENDED
FORMER LORD MAYOR OF LONDON.
PORTUGUESE CLAIM RECALLED.
Sir William Waterlow, ex-Lord Mr>yor of London, and head of the famous bank-note printing firm, died at his Harrow Weald home yesterday, reports the Australian Press Association by cable.
Sir William, who was 61 years of age, figured in the extraordinary Portuguese National Bank note fraud case recently, when the court gave judgment against his firm for over £1,000,000. The costs in the case were later reduced from over £560,000 to £300,000. Sir William became Alderman for Cornhi.ll ward in 1922, eight years after he entered the London County Council. He was Sheriff in 1928 and Lord Mayor the following year, being succeeded in that office by Sir William P. Neal, the present Lord Mayor. Although he was a golf enthusiast, Sir William played tennis and was a practised fisherman. He married Miss Adelaide Hay, Edinburgh, in 1906, and has two sons.
