MAN WANTED TO GO TO GAOL' WINDOW SMASHED AT AUCKLAND STRANGE EXPLANATION GIVEN. ■ By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, July 3. A strange explanation was given by the police for the action of Bruce Charles Martin, aged 41, in smashing a large window in a jewellery store on June 26. When arrested he was reticent and was remanded pending inquiries. To-day Detective-Sergeant Kelly eaid accused bad been under the influence of Claude McLaughlin, alias Claude Dolores, alias Dr. Claude Schneider, a fortuneteller, who was recently sent to gaol for 12 months for fraud. Accused now said he broke the window because he thought he would be sent to gaol where he could again associate with this “low-, down blackguard.” Accused came of respectable' parents and was doing well until he came under McLaughlin’s influence. Now his nervous system was practically wrecked. The magistrate committed accused to the yare of the probation officer for. two years and recommended that he bo given some hard work.
