TIMARU CONFLAGRATION
SPECTACULAR FIRE CHECKED WOMAN TENANT SEVERELY CUT. WALK ALONG GLASS VERANDAH. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Timaru, June 24. Fire seriously damaged the premises of Charles Begg and Co. at the corner of the Arcade- at Stafford Street soon after 10 o’clock last night. Before the alarm was given the fire had already burst through the roof and when the brigade arrived the fire had a strong hold, the flames leaping high over the building. A tenant, Mrs. Johnstone, was in bed when the fire broke out and had a narrow escape. She climbed out of a window and walked along the glass verandah, but in her progress was badly cut by broken glass. Once the brigade arrived the flames were quickly brought under control, but not before considerable damage had been done. ’ • The blaze was a spectacular one and for a time fears were entertained that the conflagration would spread to adjoining buildings. The building, which is owned by W. McKeown, Christchurch, was badly damaged by fire, and water caused considerable destruction in the main shop.
