TONKS ROSE BOWL MATCHES. The third round of the Tonks rose bowl has been finished by the Hawera Ladies’ Golf Club with the following results: Mrs. Uorey won from Mrs. Gabites by default; Miss A. Wills won from Mrs. Rudge by default; Miss M. Hawken won from Miss J. Easton by default; Miss W. Huggins and Mrs. Thomson twice halved their match and in the third play-off Mrs. Thomson proved victorious; Mrs. J. J. Pease beat Mrs. W. Bright; Mrs. Walklcy beat Miss E. Murdoch; Mrs. Rota beat Miss V. Death; Miss E. Burgess beat Mrs. McAiierin. Owing to the exceptionally wet week the closing date for the fourth round has been postponed to July 6. For the sealed handicap played off last week the holes chosen by Mrs. French, the patron, of the club, were the four longest and the five shortest. The winner in the senior division of the competition was Mrs. Dickie, whose gross score for those niiie holes was 46, net 39. Miss M. Hawken’s score was 51 —41, and Miiss E. Burgess’ 48 —42. Miss E. Murdock won the junior division, 52 —34. On Friday the final round of the three-day eclectic match will be played, the draw being as follows: Mrs. Corey plays Mrs. Thomson, Mrs. Dickie plays Mrs. Gibson, Miss D. Death plays Mrs. Rudge. ■ Attention of members is drawn to the match with the Hawera Golf Club, which will be played on Wednesday and Saturday, July 1 and 4. A list of the handicapped members’ names has been posted in the clubhouse, and each player desiring to take part in the match is expected to mark against her name whether she will be available for both days, or for one. The Taplin Cup match against Patea has been postponed till Thursday on account of wet weather. A very successful day was held for the non-handicap players last week, when the president, Miss E. Burgess, addressed a large gathering, and explained the rules of medal play, as well as the ordinary rules and etiquette of golf, after which a short meda round over ten holes w«s played. Another day will be held shortly, when match play will be expained, after which a Yankee tournament for all non-handicap- playevs wishing to take part will be commenced. A °trophy has been offered by the secretary, and all names should be handed in to her. Every member of the club is expected to have a book of rules, which may be procured from the secretary. ROUND THE COUNCIL TABLE. TOUCHES OF HUMOUR AT HAWERA Touches of humour enlivened proceedings at Monday’s meeting bf the Hawera Borough Council. Cr. W. G. Walkley (referring to an advertisement for pills on a railway bridge just south of Hawera): I don’t see why the Railway Department should disfigure a main highway when a local body would not. I think; we should protest. The Mayor (Mr. E. A. Pacey).; It will be all right if they are good pills. Cr. Walkley: But we don’t need them in a town like Hawera. Cr. Walkley (who receives a free copy of the local bodies’ handbook, when the distribution of these to councillors was being discussed): I won’t need one. I’m— — GT. A. K. North: Not buying your own? Cr. Walkley: Well, getting my own. Cr. Walkley (when a ratepayer wrote objecting to the council building a road through 0 his five-acre property,' but agreeing to sell the three-quarters of an acre required for the road at £500): Is that for the five acres? The town clerk (Mr. H. S. Elliott): Just the three-quarters. Cr. North: Laud must be valuable at Nolantown. Cr. R. Mortlock: Perhaps there’s a crold-mine on the property. ° The Mayor (when asking the Press to use their discretion in reporting part of the discussion): We can’t compel them. It is only by their grace Cr. North: However, we are told that grace is better than the law.
